Football? In America? [ 1 Comment | #6709 ]

Okay, culture shock. Since when is real football enough a part of American culture to be featured in a car commercial? <shakes head> Someday we might even get the name right. ;)

post-OSCON [ 2 Comments | #6685 ]

I'm back in Portland. I flew into Seattle (to get my car) and then drove home. I got in about 2AM. I thought about stopping at a hotel on the way down, but since I slept the 3 hours on the plane I was pretty alert. And I really just wanted to get home. :)

Another great conference. More great times with neat people and good conversations over food. What is it about eating? Hmmm... I guess it's not really the eating, it's the fact that meals in Western culture are a time to sit and talk.

I've decided I have to go buy some strings for my guitar today. I miss playing, I'm going to start again. I haven't played in several years, so the strings are dead, dead, dead.

Then, I'll rent some movies. Definitely a veg-night. :)

Up in the air, junior birdmen... [ 0 Comments | #6490 ]

I'm taking off for OSCON. With a small detour to Seattle to see my son.

Heh, last time I drove to Seattle I spent the whole trip back singing harmony to PP&M. I know, three hours of PP&M would probably be enough to drive most people batty. :) But picking out their harmonies is a complex enough task that it keeps my brain occupied. I suspect this trip it will be time for some Rammstein.

YAPC wrapup [ 3 Comments | #6103 ]

What a week! I met alot of nice people, saw some old friends, made some new friends, and slept way less than should be humanly possible. My favorite talk was Larry's. There were many excellent talks, but that one spoke to my heart. My favorite moments were listening to gnat play the banjo Thursday night at Brent's bbq and pigging out on ice cream in Casey's room Friday night. Neat people, good conversation.

I got home 23.30 Saturday night and pretty much slept all day Sunday. Now back to normality. What's normality? Maybe I should sleep another day. :)

Tempt me not, ye wanton Apple harlot... [ 0 Comments | #5045 ]

Angels and saints preserve us, Apple is making 1U servers! Even though they went with ATA/100 over SCSI, even though they coupled 266MHz DDR SDRAM with a 133MHz system bus, even though the price is apple-high, I want one. Nay, I desire one, with that hardware lust that sinks deep into the soul and churns the stomach...

New and improved sunshine! Now with 20% more Zing(TM)! [ 1 Comment | #4869 ]

I drove to Seattle and back yesterday. My god, it was a gorgeous day! I know it's impossible, but it feels like the sunlight is sunnier here than elsewhere. The only other place I've ever experienced sunlight this intense is in Kenya, and there I always assumed it was caused by the altitude. Crackpot theory of the day: it's either a physical effect of the rain, that there is less dust and pollution for the sunlight to filter through, or it's a psychological effect of the rain, that you really notice sunny days after the cloudy ones.

Today the test servers, tomorrow the world! [ 0 Comments | #4802 ]

(erm, the production servers that is...)

Whoo-hoo! Three weeks at my new job and I've persuaded them to let me compile a recent version of Perl and DBI/DBD::Oracle on the servers. Good-bye FOCUS, you archaic monolith from the pestilential pits of hell. ;)

I really thought it would take several months. <shrug> It's one of those rare occasions when I'm thrilled to be wrong.
