Jakob - Subsets of Sets For more info: Jakob
A review of Napier trio Jakob's debut album has to acknowledge a debt, to former Hawkes Bay boys, now Dunedin trio, HDU. Jakob is like a junior version of that great southern band, without the angsty bits, sudden mood swings or vocals – a sort of HDU on Prozac. But even HDU are standing on the shoulders of those who came before them – Bailter Space are surely the foremost practitioners of spaced-out and trippy rock for this country. The trick is, can it stand-alone as its own work of art rather than an imitation of earlier work? On the evidence of this strong first album, Jakob are more than the sum of others parts. A pallette of building, epic guitar is laid over a strong rhythm section for a full sound, the compositions rise and fall organically and emotion is effortlessly conveyed despite the lack of any singing. It doesn't rock as hard as HDU but your mother still won’t understand. A drifting and haunting guitardriven experience, full of feeling and spirit. For more info: Jakob |
