Iraqi opposition to announce plans for "provisional government"

LONDON, July 26 (AFP) - Exiled members of the Iraqi opposition meeting in London were expected Friday to announce plans for what they describe as a provisional government, intended as an alternative to the regime of Iraqi President Saddam Hussein.

The Iraqi National Congress leadership council and the Iraqi National Movement, another opposition group, were to hold a news conference at Kensington Town Hall, in the heart of one of the British capital's most exclusive areas, around noon (1100 GMT).

Zaab Fethna, of the Iraqi National Congress, told Nampa-AFP ahead of the conference: "They are about to announce a plan for a provisional government."

The move comes amid speculation that Washington wants to target Iraq as its next target in the so-called war on terror.

American President George W. Bush has pledged to use "all tools" at his disposal to remove Saddam.

Earlier this month after after three days of meetings in London, former Iraqi officers in exile called on the Iraqi army to topple Saddam, and said they were setting up a war council to help do so.

The Iraqi National Congress is an umbrella group which brings together opposition figures aiming to topple Saddam.

There is, however, dispute over how representative the exiled opposition factions are and how much support they could muster inside Iraq. - Nampa-AFP
