Apple sells QuickTime 6 MPEG-2 Playback Component
by Peter Cohen, pcohen@maccentral.com
July 18, 2002 4:35 pm ET

Apple today released QuickTime 6 MPEG-2 Playback Component. The new component is aimed at professional content creators who want to be able to view MPEG-2 streams without having to transcode them into other media before viewing them on their Macs.

The new component provides QuickTime 6 users with the ability to import MPEG-2 content, as well as play it back. Both muxed and non-muxed program streams are supported, so you can play MPEG-2 tracks with interlaced audio and video, or elementary program streams.

The new component provides the ability to play back MPEG-2 program streams, but it does not play back encrypted DVDs like Hollywood movies. It also does not support the ability to view transport streams, which combine audio and video with independent time bases for environments where errors are likely.

The QuickTime 6 MPEG-2 Playback Component costs US$19.99. It's available for both Windows and Mac. The add-on can be purchased through the Apple Store online.

The Mac system requirements call for QuickTime Player or QuickTime Pro version 6.0 or later, G4/500MHz, 128MB RAM, Mac OS 9 or later (or Mac OS X 10.1.3 or later).
