ZByte High Tech Playing Cards

The first logical change for playing cards in 500 years
Created just in time for the 21st century

Playing cards continue to be the foremost tool of the game player. This is proof of the grandeur of the original design--basically unchanged for 500 years, except for stylistic changes to improve visibility for fast play. What was needed was a way to allow new uses of the ancient design while preserving compatibility for playing all of the wonderful traditional games that have evolved over the centuries.

ZByte's design accomplishes this with its new high-tech suits that have their functional meaning derived from nineteenth-century Boolean logic and twentieth-century technology. Yet, its use of just four suits maintains a design simplicity that may be enjoyed by card players of all ages. In addition, its number cards, Ace through ten, binary numbers are printed alongside their decimal equivalents.

ZByte contains the traditional number cards, aces, jacks, queens, and kings, but with four special card suits derived from the basic Boolean principles of all computers and all Web search engines. Also, included are two robot "IF-THEN" logic jokers and face cards of famous scientists, including Mary Fairfax Somerville, Maria Gaetana Agnesi, Sophie Germain, Lady Ada Lovelace, Charles Babbage, George Boole, Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz, and Blaise Pascal. Its jacks are cyberworld robots. All designs are original and include fractal computer art patterns.

The suits of ordinary playing cards were invented in fifteenth-century France: tréfle (club), carreau (diamond), pique (spade), and coeur (heart). Their meanings, if any, play no role in card games today--the four ancient suits function only as separators. In contrast, ZByte's card suits not only serve as separation signs, but if used as logic gates, also have universal meanings of their own that open up the possibility for a whole new generation of games.

ZByte is a 52-card deck that may be used for all traditional card games, such as Solitaire, blackjack, gin rummy and Poker, as well as with new computer games, educational games, or binary math games created at home or at school.
