 Halo National Tournament
[ Jul 21st 21:36PM by   link to this newspost ]

It's here.

A joint collaboration between Bungie Studios, Microsoft, iGames, and Electronics Boutique, the first official National Halo Tournament will kick off soon in a gaming center near you.

On August 10 and 11, you too can throw your chips in the pot to win such swag as an RCA 50-inch plasma flat screen TV, a Bose Lifestyle 35 speaker system, Xboxes, games, etc., oh my. If you make the playoffs, you'll be shipped free of charge to Redmond, WA, to play against a handful of other gamers who think they're as good as you are.

There's a 18-and-up age limit on the tournament, but I can't say if that's enforced or not. Details below.

 Alex Seropian to Leave Bungie
[ Jul 20th 02:28AM by Brandon 'Vector' Oto  link to this newspost ]

Today, it was announced that Alex Seropian, CEO of Bungie, will be leaving the company at the end of August to pursue other things (his family, for one).

Alex was one of the founders of the company, and has been punting around those slackers since the beginning; he's worked on every game they've released, and has been a driving force behind the company for years.

Now the chump's taking off. We're all a bit saddened by the prospect.

 JUN's in the Spotlight!
[ Jul 19th 15:24PM by Ryan 'Mhaddy' Matthews  link to this newspost ]

Good friend of mine, and ex-Axis developer, "JUN" is in this week's community spotlight. JUN has long since been a member of the Junkyard community, keeping us up to date with the latest Axis information before the media as a whole got their grubby little hands on it. It's a good read and gives you a little insight into the life of a Korean game developer.

 3D Halo
[ Jul 18th 23:33PM by Brandon 'Vector' Oto  link to this newspost ]

There's been some rather impressive fan-made 3D models and images being created recently in the Halo world... picked up from HBO, check out:

Lovely rendered scene of the Master Chief by a waterfall, adapted from an old screenshot. Done by strykerwolf.

A model of a fictional Halo aircraft called the "Skyhawk" - an idea for a PC/Mac Halo mod. Done by the remarkable Stormsinger.

And on an unrelated note, if you happen to live in California, you can play Halo (or other assorted Xbox and Gamecube games) on a full-sized IMAX dome. Interested? Enlist in this here tournament, and if you make the final round, you'll be there.

 Another NetSphere Interview
[ Jul 18th 20:49PM by Ryan 'Mhaddy' Matthews  link to this newspost ]

Another NetSphere interview has popped up on the gaming scene. This time, Action Vault had the pleasure of sitting down with Jason Kim of JC Entertainment's US Operation to ask a few questions. Here's a snip:

Action Vault: What type of gameworld are you building for NetSphere? Will it incorporate a variety of different locations, and influenced you to choose the particular sorts of game environments that you did?

Jason Kim: We plan to design maps that contain our story of the reconstruction of cities destroyed by the comet. Also, by using the setting of mercenary fighters, we wanted to allow the players to experience combat in secretive and secluded areas where regular people would not have access. Therefore, the players will be able to enjoy thrilling battles in several different rebuilding cities as well as places where secret bases might exist such as sewers, mountain caverns or even a deep subterranean mining complex.
There isn't a lot of new information to read, but it's still worth a look. There even appears to be two new screens released, both of which have been added to our NetSphere gallery.

 tJY's Z-Opolis Interview
[ Jul 18th 11:57AM by Ryan 'Mhaddy' Matthews  link to this newspost ]

A lot of attention has been paid to Massively Multiplayer Online Community Games (MMOCGs) in the last few years. Developers are constantly trying to come out with something new and innovative, something that their contemporary hasn't thought of yet. The guys over at PersistentWorldZ are onto something with Z-Opolis. We had a chance to sit down with Kevin Hannah, Co-Founder and Chief Marketing Officer over at PersistentWorldZ to talk about just that.

ATi Radeon 9000 and 9700 reviews
[ Jul 18th 11:22AM by Charles 'grey wolf' Banas  link to this newspost ]

ATi has finally lifted the NDA on their new Radeon cards, the 9000 and 9700. Anandtech has a 9700 review and a 9000 pro review where they call the 9000 a GeForce4 MX killer. [H]ard|OCP also has a 9700 review and 9000 review. And, to round it off, Tom's Hardware has a 9700 review and 9000 review. The 9700 is priced at a hefty $399USD, while its cousins, the 9000 and 9000 pro are $109USD and $129USD respectively. Canucks will clearly pay much more.

[ Jul 17th 19:01PM by Charles 'grey wolf' Banas  link to this newspost ]

SiS is returning to the 3D market with a new offering: the Xabre. This budget card is meant to compete with the GeForce 4 MX line and the ATi Radeon 7500. And comete it does! It outperforms most budget cards by a considerable margin in many tests, and even outshines itself at resultions of 1600x1200! Equipped with a pixel shader, it is the only budget card on the market that has pixel shader support and can run 3DMarks 2001's Nature test. Read the preview, it's a nice card.

 NetSphere Interview
[ Jul 15th 22:24PM by Ryan 'Mhaddy' Matthews  link to this newspost ]

Kudos to DuckieofDoom who pointed out in our forums that HomeLAN has posted up their very own NetSphere interview with JC Entertainment's Jason Kim. Quite a good read and it builds upon tJY's own Netsphere interview. Required quottage:

HomeLAN - About how many types of mecha will Netsphere have?

Jason Kim - There will be a total of 20 Mecha available to players. Aside from the initial novice type, there will be three heavy fire support types, three close combat types, three long range types, and three standard (average) types. In addition, there will be seven secret Mecha types that players will have to find to gain access to.

HomeLAN - What kind of new weapons and powerups will be available for the mechas in Netsphere?

Jason Kim - New weapons, such as swords and shields, will be added to the existing artillery, which will be reorganized and redesigned. The original items will be kept in the game, and added upon.

DirectX 8.1 crashes on AMD systems
[ Jul 15th 20:27PM by Charles 'grey wolf' Banas  link to this newspost ]

Turns out that some DX8.1 software will crash on AMD processors, and Micro$oft has released a fix for it. It replaces the d3d8.dll file in your windows\system (for win9x/ME, system32 for XP) or winnt\system32 (for Win2k) directory. So, if you have an AMD processor and you have problems with games crashing without errors, try this patch.
