DuoPen & e-Pad coming to the Mac

   he mouse is fine as a pointing tool, but no matter how ergonomic its design could possibly be, it can never surpass the convenience of a pen in your hand. On the other hand, specialized pen-and-tablet devices used as drafting tools by designers, draughtsmen, and engineers in architectural firms, publishing houses, and manufacturing firms are often costly.
But now there's DuoPen, the new and relatively affordable made-in-Singapore electronic pen. Developed by electronics engineer James Chan, an ex-Hewlett-Packard employee who started his own company MG Logic two years ago, the device is used like a regular pen, and also
controls the cursor the way a mouse does.
The DuoPen comes with the e-Pad, an electronic writing pad which corresponds to the computer screen. Where you point the DuoPen on the e-Pad is where the cursor will be on the computer screen. With it, you can write, sketch,
trace, edit, annotate, and color anything on the screen. You can even place a photograph on the e-Pad, start up your graphics software, and trace the picture with the DuoPen.
The DuoPen is designed with a pressure-sensitive nib. Like a soft-lead pencil, the harder you press, the thicker the line appears on your screen. With practice, you can sign your name and make line drawings that look as neat as those you would have made with a normal pen or pencil.
The e-Pad and DuoPen kit works with major drawing and design programs including Photoshop, Illustrator, Freehand, PageMaker, CorelDraw, Word, and Powerpoint – but only on the Windows platform at the moment.
MG Logic plans to introduce a version of the e-Pad and DuoPen kit for the Mac by the middle of next month, which will come in all of the five translucent colors of the iMac. The kit is being marketed by Digiland Singapore at a retail price of S$173.
