Single crochet braid:



With size 10 hook Chain 2, 3 single crochet in first chain, chain 1, turn. * 3 single crochet in second single crochet from hook, chain 1, turn. Repeat from * to the desired length.
For the snowflake you will need 46 V's (points) on each side of the braid. Sew the ends of the braid together to form a circle and finish off ends.

Center: 1 shuttle and a ball thread.
Ring of 3 - 3 - 3 - 3 - 3 - 3 - 3, cl.
Ring of 3 + (join to last p of first ring) 3 - 3 - 3 - 3 - 3 - 3, cl, rw.
Chain of 2 - 4 - 2, rw.
Repeat 1st two rings.
Chain of 2 + (join to last p of previous chain) 4 - 2
Repeat 1st two rings.
Chain of 2 + 4 + (join to 1st p on 1st chain worked) 2.
Join to base of first ring. Cut, tie and hide ends.

Next round: 2 shuttles CTM
Join thread between any two sets of rings in the second last p of one set of rings and the second p of the next set of rings. See diagram to see where the crochet braid is joined.
Chain of 3 +(join to V on braid) 3 + (join to the next V on braid) 3 + (join to the next V on braid) 3 - 3, rw.
Ring of 6 + (skip one p and join to the next free p on the same ring as the second part of the last join) 6, cl, rw.
Chain of 3 - 3 - 3.
With shuttle 2 make a ring of 3 - 3 + (skip 3 V's on the braid and join to the next V) 3 + (skip one V on the braid and join to the next V) 3 + (skip one V on the braid and join to the next V) 3 - 3, cl.
With shuttle 1 continue chain with 3 - 3 - 3, rw.
Ring of 6 + (skip one free p on the next center ring and join to the next p) 6, cl, rw.
Chain of 3 - 3 + (skip 3 V's on the braid and join to the next V) 3 - 3, rw
Ring of 4 + (skip one p on same ring as last join and join in the next p) 4 + (skip one p on the next center ring and join in the next p) 4, cl, rw.
Chain of 3 - 3 + (skip 2 V's on the braid and join to the next V) 3 - 3 + (skip one p and join to the next p on the same ring as previous join) 3 - 3 - 3.
With shuttle 2 make a ring of 3 - 3 + (skip 3 V's on the braid and join to the next V) 3 + (skip one V on the braid and join to the next V) 3 + (skip one V on the braid and join to the next V) 3 - 3, cl.
With shuttle 1 continue chain with 3 - 3 - 3 + (skip one free p on the next ring and join in the next p) 3.- 3 + (skip 3 V's on the braid and join to the next V) 3 - 3, rw.
Ring of 4 + (skip one p on same ring as last join and join in the next p) 4 + (skip one p on the next center ring and join in the next p) 4, cl, rw.
Chain of 3 - 3 + (skip 2 V's on the braid and join to the next V) 3 - 3, rw.
Ring of 6 + (skip one p and join to the next free p on the same ring as the last join) 6, cl, rw.
Chain of 3 - 3 - 3.
With shuttle 2 make a ring of 3 - 3 + (skip 3 V's on the braid and join to the next V) 3 + (skip one V on the braid and join to the next V) 3 + (skip one V on the braid and join to the next V) 3 - 3, cl.
With shuttle 1 continue chain with 3 - 3 - 3, rw.
Ring of 6 + (skip one free p on the next center ring and join to the next p) 6, cl, rw.
Chain of 3 - 3 + (skip 3 V's on the braid and join to the next V) 3 + (join in the next V on braid) 3 + (join in the beginning V on the braid where the first join was made) 3, join in the p where you started the chain for the round. Cut, tie and hide ends.

Outside round: 1 shuttle and a ball thread.
Join thread in the 3rd V to the left of the center V that points down on the top of the heart.
Chain of 2 + (join to the next V on braid) 1 + (join to the next 2 V's on braid) 1 + (join to the next V on braid) 2 + (join to the next V on braid)
Chain of 3 - 3 - 3 - 3 + (skip one V on braid and shuttle join in the next V)
Continue in this manner around heart, leaving one V free between chains. Except at the bottom point of the heart do not skip a V, but shuttle join to the next V on braid. See diagram.
