"A deeper understanding of
What is Naturopathic Medicine?Naturopathic Medicine has existed as a distinct health care profession for over a century. It blends the wisdom of healing traditions worldwide with the latest advances in the study of human health and wellness.
TrainingA Licensed naturopathic physician (N.D.) has attended a four-year, graduate level naturopathic medical school and is educated in all of the same basic sciences as an M.D. In addition to a standard medical curriculum, the naturopathic physician is required to complete four years of training in clinical nutrition, acupuncture, homeopathic medicine, botanical medicine, psychology, and counseling.
Naturopathic practitioners are trained to provide individual and family-oriented healthcare to all age groups - from pediatrics to geriatrics.
After graduation, a naturopathic physician takes rigorous professional board exams so that he or she may be licensed as a primary care, general practice physician in those states or jurisdictions that do so.
Because Naturopathic Medicine is not yet licensed or regulated in the State of California, it is important to distinguish those naturopathic physicians that have completed an intensive four-year program at an accredited school from those who have completed a short-term course in naturopathy, most often by correspondence.
PhilosophyBridging the worlds of conventional and alternative medicines, Naturopathic practitioners strive to identify the underlying cause of illness rather than simply eliminating or suppressing symptoms. We carefully evaluate the whole person - the physical, mental, emotional, genetic, and lifestyle factors that come into play - and use natural, non-invasive therapies aimed at supporting the body's own innate healing abilities. We also educate our patients - thus giving them the tools they need to achieve their highest level of health.
Who can Benefit?Naturopathic Medicine is useful in a wide range of acute and chronic conditions - it also provides preventive care for those individuals at high-risk of degenerative disease (cancer, autoimmune disease, cardiovascular disease, etc.) or for those who wish to maintain and optimize their current well-being.
