EVA/DC Racing Chairman, Greg Pokorny, has been elected Vice President of the National Electric Drag Racing Association (NEDRA). 2002 Power of DC Drag Race a Smashing Success!!

On June 29, EVA/DC hosted our 2nd Annual Power of DC Drag Race which was held at the Mason-Dixon dragway in Hagerstown, Maryland. This years theme was "American Amps." Electric drag racing enthusiasts from all over the East Coast converged at the dragway for a day of racing. The "Power of DC" is one of several NEDRA events held throughout the year. Visit our Power of DC web site for information and pictures from this year's event. Also look for an article on the race in the August edition of "EV News."

We still have plenty of T-Shirts left over featuring the "Power of DC" Car-Toon shown to the right. Contact Greg Pokorny for more information at grepok@aol.com.

The NESEA Tour de Sol came to DC May 14. 50 green cars entered the rally ranging from a VW Rabbit powered by vegestable oil to solar electric cars. Check out our Tour de Sol Gallery. Many of the entries included high school and college teams as well as local homebuilt vehicles.

On May 12 the vehicles were inspected and tested at the Inner Harbor in Baltimore. The starting line began on 3rd Street on the Mall in DC on May 14 where the cars were put on display and EPA Administrator Christine Todd Whitman gave a speech commemorating the event.

From there the rally travelled to Sandy Point State Park in Maryland for an autocross event then onto Philadelphia, Trenton, and the finish line in New York City on the 18.

Also racing at the Tour de Sol were the Junior Solar Sprints which were built by area elementary school students. These are small solar powered cars that run along a guide wire and are about the size of a shoebox. Coordinating the event was our own EVA/DC Program Chairman Charlie Garlow. Visit http://www.ssfs.org/inside/middle/tourdesol.htm for pictures.

The Tour de Sol is the world's largest annual educational event that aims to advance the development and use of sustainable transportation and energy options, including solar-powered, fuel-cell powered, hybrid and battery powered electric cars, trucks, buses, motorcycles, bicycles and other vehicles.

Visit the NESEA Tour de Sol site for more details.
