The Serious Guitarist is a valuable resource. If you are looking for
a fingering for virtually any Scale, Mode, Chord or Arpeggio,
you'll find it in the book. But it is also much more than just
another reference book.
The Serious Guitarist is intended as a window into the mind of the author, and the systems of organization and visualization which have evolved for him over the 20+ years that he has been playing the guitar. One of the most important of these systems is what Rod calls The Four Regions.
The Four Regions approach allows the guitarist to learn virtually everything on the guitar from a common perspective, thereby seeing more clearly the similarities which exist between different musical elements. When you can see these similarities, you can associate new things that you are trying to learn with other things that you already know, and that speeds up the learning process.

Rod Furlott is a professional guitarist who lives in the Portland, Oregon area, where he has come to be regarded as one of the regions best players and instructors.
In 1991 Rod earned a Bachelors degree in Music performance, on Jazz guitar, from the University of Oregon. He has the distinction of being the first person ever to earn such a degree from the U of O for Jazz guitar.
He can be seen regularly, performing around the Portland area in a solo guitar setting, and with other groups, from duos and trios, to larger ensembles. For booking information, or for a listing of upcoming performances, feel free to e-mail.
