Race Summary & Final Results

The race started in total darkness at 4:00am.just outside the town of Elkford. A total of 44 teams crowded the start line on their mountain bikes with bike lights and headlamps blazing. They sped off into the darkness toward Crossing Creek Pass where they would climb and then descend over 3000 ft of elevation to reach the Bull River Valley. After another 30km along the Bull River Forest Service Road teams would leave their bikes at the first transition area to begin a 30km trek.

Team Peak reached the transition first and had just completed the river crossing when Team John Henry-Scooby Doo pulled into the transition. A 20km trail run brought them to a short but very challenging bushwack section. It was only 3km long but took most teams more than 3 hours to complete. Following the bushwack, teams made their way back down to the Bull River and the start of the canoe section. Team Spirit used their strong navigation skills to take the lead through the bushwack section and were first to the canoe put-in.

After the first 6 or 7 teams, many teams arrived at the canoe put-in close together causing a backlog as teams were only allowed to start the canoe once the previous team had safely reached the first portage. To alleviate the backlog, teams were given the option of being shuttled forward to the end of the first portage where they could continue the race. Time adjustments were made to compensate for the waiting time in the backlog and the portion of the paddle that was skipped by some teams.

Team Spirit made excellent time through the short 12km paddle and maintained their lead heading into the second bike leg of the race. They were now faced with the arduous climb through Iron Pass to reach checkpoint 8 at Island Lake Lodge while the rain fell steadily.

Once at Island Lake Lodge, teams would leave their bikes with their support crews and continue on foot for the final, spectacular trek across the Lizard Range to Fernie Alpine Resort. A cut-off time of 9:00am on Sunday had been set for all teams. They must have checked out of checkpoint 8, Island Lake Lodge, by this time or they would not be allowed to continue on the course. Due to an unfortunate and tragic accident off course involving a staff member of Frontier Adventure Racing, however, the race was halted prior to 9:00am. All teams that reached Checkpoint 8 before the 9:00am cutoff are considered officially ranked and the final standings are according to arrival time at Checkpoint 8.

Team Spirit, having arrived very early in the morning at Checkpoint 8 had continued on the course prior to the race being halted and completed the entire race course.
