Race Summary

This year's race started in the remote central parts of Résèrve des Laurentides, just northwest of Parc de la Jacques Cartier. After a 4 hour bus ride to the start area, teams wearily unloaded from the bus amidst the occasional snowflake falling to the ground.

The race started at 5:30am with a short but challenging trek through some difficult bushwacking. Team Spirit and Team Continuum changed the lead many times between one another, but no other teams ever caught them.

At the end of the first trek teams got on their mountain bikes to begin a 2,500 ft descent into Parc de la Jacques Cartier. Through a deep gorge and past waterfalls they raced to the bottom of the valley and to the start of the whitewater kayaking section on the Rivière de la Jacques Cartier. It was a stunning ride and probably the first time we've ever had a bike section with no uphill! Some racers accused us of getting soft at this point. Just wait till the next bike section.

The whitewater paddling, done in 2 person inflatable kayaks, was a treat as well. Almost continuous Class II to Class III water saw many boats flip and many smiling faces. Our safety kayakers were kept very busy but the result was a wild and thrilling ride.

At the end of the whitewater teams exchanged their inflatable kayaks for canoes. They continued further down river through the spectacular Vallée de la Jacques Cartier. The views were incredible and the paddle was as easy as it was on moving water. So far, a fun and spectacular ride for all, which is not a characteristic for a Sierra Designs' Raid the North race and a warning sign for things to come.

At the end of the canoe section, teams saw their support crews again and had a chance to warm up before heading into a 30km trek which would take them through some very challenging bushwacking and through a deep gorge. This was designed to be the toughest part of the race course and would be the point that most competitors step outside their comfort zone, as much of it was to be done at night as well. Unfortunately, this section was made significantly harder when Checkpoint 9, the midpoint of the bushwack and the location of a zip line across the river in the gorge, was not where it was supposed to be. Race management fixed the problem accordingly and the racers moved on to the next checkpoint.

Following the trek, teams headed into the final and longest stage of the race, a 70km mountain bike leg over many hills leading to Mont Sainte-Anne Resort. The course used logging roads and old trails including a winter-only trail that connects the main part of the race course to Mont Sainte-Anne Resort, the only trail that does so. Although short, this trail proved to be barely passable without snow with some competitors sinking up to their waste in mud. Although slow going teams that persevered were rewarded with an exciting downhill ride on some of the single-track trails of Mont Sainte-Anne.

Team Continuum and Team Spirit stayed within an hour of each other throughout the race and exchanged the lead many times. Despite using different strategies and taking breaks at different times they arrived at CP13, the second last checkpoint, together. Team Continuum, being quite familiar with Mont Sainte-Anne made it very quickly to the finish line while Team Spirit struggled to find the route to the bottom. In the end, Team Continuum took the first race of the season by a margin of roughly 1 hour over Team Spirit. It was a close competition throughout and I am sure these two teams will be seeing much more of each other.
