Perhaps the most visible Beatrice Salvation Army relief effort is its annual Christmas bell-ringing campaign.

While the dimes and quarters dropped in those red kettles every holiday season generate funds for food, Christmas toys and winter relief for needy families, the kettle actually represents much more than that.

"It represents the volunteer spirit that makes the Salvation Army go," Capt. Mary-Lou Branson said.

Wymore declared disaster area after storms
WYMORE - Mayor Julie Everson has proclaimed a "Declaration of Disaster" after storms last week knocked down trees and power lines and disrupted utility service throughout the town.

The declaration will "open up ways to get some funding" from the county as well as the state for city cleanup and rebuilding, according to Gage County Emergency Management Director Mark Meints.

"Some people were out of power up to 24 hours," Meints said Monday.

Two in hospital following accident
FILLEY - Two Gage County women were in a Lincoln hospital Monday morning, one in critical condition, following an early morning accident Sunday north of Filley.

According to a Gage County Sheriff's Office report, 18-year-old Amy Hibbert of rural Adams was driving a 1995 Monte Carlo, owned by Jim and Sheri Hibbert of rural Adams, on South 134th Road about 3 miles north of Filley before 3:29 a.m. when the car apparently left the road and struck two fence posts on the side of a field driveway before coming to rest in a ditch.

Hibbert's passenger, 18-year-old Melissa Neukirch of Adams, was reported in critical condition at BryanLGH Medical Center West in Lincoln on Monday morning.
