Interplay announced today that according to early sales figures, their AD&D roleplaying game Baldur's Gate has sold 175,000 units in its first two weeks on retail shelves. One of the sources of supporting data is a German based retail tracking firm called Chart Track, which tracks sales data in Europe. Interplay claims that Baldur's Gate is currently the top selling game in Europe, Canada, and the United States - with presales activity in Australia, Singapore, and Hong Kong at record levels.

"It is unusual to have a game work on a worldwide basis like this and it certainly is great news to have success with a product on such a scale," said Interplay Chairman & CEO, Brian Fargo. "We had to make a critical decision to spend the extra time to get the game right and delay the release, so it's especially satisfying to see it sell through to this level. The success of Baldur's Gate just adds to the positive momentum that we have enjoyed since the release of Fallout 2 in October."

Baldur's Gate is a role-playing game set in the Forgotten Realms, the most popular Advanced Dungeons & Dragons campaign setting to date. Baldur's Gate is set in the Sword Coast region of the world, south of the booming city of Neverwinter. The game spans five CDs and features a game world filled with around 10,000 scrolling game screens, offering over a hundred hours of roleplaying. The adventure unfurls through seven chapters, with plenty of subplots that intertwine in and out of the main story line, and features an AD&D core rules set that makes it easy for gamers to have real-time combat without having knowledge of how the system works.
