MOTHER'S PIN BOX

Now you can make the perfect gift for Mom in her favorite colors. Decorate the cover with a decorative fabric or buttons. When opened the box unfolds revealing convenient cushioned flaps to store her treasured pins.

 Materials:
  • 1/3 yd. Aleene's Hot Stitch Fusible Web
  • 1/4 yd. fabric "A" (outside)
  • 1/8 yd. fabric "B" (inside)
  • 3/4 yds. 3/8" wide ribbon OR 18 yd. if using optional buttons
  • 1/8 yd. high loft batting
  • (1) 10" X 13" piece crescent board
  • small handful of fiberfill
  • glue gun/glue sticks
  • masking tape
    OPTIONAL: For cover: miscellaneous buttons, OR 1/4 yd. (OR 6 1/4" square) decorative fabric

Cut: Note: label all pieces

  • cut board, batting and fusible web as directed on all pattern pieces; cut board on solid lines, score on dashed lines (-----).
   
  • 6 1/4" square fabric "A" (cover)

of fabric "B"

  • 4 1/4" circle (pin cushion)
  • (4) 3 1/8" X 3 1/2" (base flaps)
  • 3 3/4" square (cover insert)

of fusible web:

  • 31/2" square (cover attachment)
  • 4" square (base bottom)
  • 3 3/4" square (inside bottom)

of ribbon:

  • (1) 41/2" piece (cover loop)
  • (1) 1112" (cover trim) Note: omit if using buttons

 

Directions:
 
  1. Following manufacturer's directions, apply all fusible web pieces to fabric "A". Cut out pieces. Remove paper backing when needed.
  2. Center board "base" (scored side down) over the fused side of corresponding fused fabric. Wrap and fuse fabric around base mitering outside corners and clipping inside corners as needed.
  3. Fuse the "inside bottom" to the inside center of "base" covering board as shown.
  4. Center a "base flap" batting piece and then a "base flap" board piece over the wrong side of a base flap "B" fabric piece. Wrap fabric to back side and secure down all edges with glue. Repeat for remaining three base flap pieces.
  5. Glue piece from step #4 to inside of base, covering all raw edges as shown Repeat for remaining sides.
  6. Fold board "cover" piece on scored lines. Tape all four sides securely with masking tape.
  7. Center board "cover" over the wrong side of corresponding fabric square. Fold edges to the inside of "cover" and glue in place.
  8. Fold the two opposite sides of the "cover attachment" fused fabric in 7/8" to the center and fuse to form a rectangle 3 1/2" X 1 1/2".
  9. Glue "cover attachment" to inside cover as shown. Fold 4 1/2" piece of ribbon in half to form loop. Glue to inside opposite side of top as shown.
  10. Cover the board "cover insert" piece following general directions in step #4.
  11. Glue "cover insert" inside the "cover", covering fabric raw edges, keeping ribbon loop and "cover attachment" free.
  12. Glue miscellaneous buttons to "cover" OR glue 1 11/2" piece of ribbon around "cover" lip . Tie a bow with remaining ribbon and glue to front of "cover" just above ribbon loop.
  13. Place "cover" on the "base" with "cover attachment" fully extended down one "flap". Fold the raw edge of the "cover attachment" up 1/2" to the inside. Securly glue the "cover attachment" to the outside of the base flap from the fold up 3/4".
  14. Place fiberfill in the center of board "pin cushion", with fiberfill down place in the center of corresponding fabric circle. Glue edges of fabric to board. Glue to the inside center of "base".
  15. Center board "base bottom" over the fused side of 4" fabric square. Wrap and fuse fabric in place on all sides. Place the cover on top of base. Apply glue to "base bottom" 1/2" from edge. Center the bottom of pin box over glue area.
  16. Pin Mother's broach pins or straight pins and needles to "base flaps" and center "pin cushion".
