Three Chimneys Farm is honored to have had the opportunity to care for and manage Seattle Slew for 17 years. We will be forever grateful to his original owners, Karen and Mickey Taylor and Jim and Sally Hill, and to the Seattle Slew Syndicate for entrusting us with this great champion. Seattle Slew was a remarkable horse, a legend in his time and a great tribute to the Thoroughbred breed.

We will continue to maintain his web page for at least a year, as we do for all stallions that leave Three Chimneys for whatever reason. We are proud of Seattle Slew and his many many accomplishments and to have had a role in his legacy.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE December 13, 2000
SEATTLE SLEW TO RETURN TO BREEDING SHED
"What a great Christmas present -- for him, and for us," said Robert Clay, in announcing that 1977 Triple Crown winner Seattle Slew will return to the breeding shed at the start of the 2001 breeding season in about seven weeks. Fertility collections and analysis conducted at Three Chimneys on December 11 and 12 show that Seattle Slew's semen quality is back to normal levels, indicating "the negative impact upon his fertility was transient in nature," said Clay.

"Indeed, if anything, his semen quality is perhaps even a little better than the start of the breeding season last year when he got seven of the first nine mares he bred in foal," commented Three Chimneys general manager Dan Rosenberg. "At this point, we feel good about his having a normal book for a stallion of his age. We will maximize breeding opportunities for the stallion by recommending that mares come to Three Chimneys prior to ovulation and remain until the optimum breeding time for each mare."

Seattle Slew, now 26, is the oldest living Kentucky Derby winner and the only horse to have won the Triple Crown having never been defeated. He is the sire of 92 stakes winners from 19 crops, including millionaire and 2000 Eclipse Award candidate Surfside and 2000 Breeders' Cup Sprint runner-up Honest Lady. He is the sire of champions A.P. Indy, Capote, Slew o' Gold, Landaluce and Swale and his offspring have earned over $70 million on the racetrack. He is one of the leading broodmares sires of 2000 and his leading sons at stud include Capote, A.P. Indy and General Meeting. A yearling colt by Seattle Slew topped the Saratoga Select Yearling Sale this year, bringing $4.2 million. "We expect Slew to breed a book of 46 mares on shareholder and breeding right holder seasons," said Clay. "One or two shareholders have indicated to me they will put their seasons on the market and the price they have mentioned is $300,000 guaranteed live foal."

"Slew's libido is excellent and we continue to be amazed by his remarkable physical recovery," said syndicate manager Mickey Taylor. "I can't say enough about the team of veterinarians involved in this case. From the surgery in early April through the eight months of follow-up care and still on-going care and consultation, Drs. Jim Morehead, Barrie Grant, Terry Blanchard, Bill Bernard, Joe Cannon and Norman Rantanen have been outstanding."

In January, Seattle Slew exhibited a lack of coordination, but was treated for the symptoms and began the breeding season on schedule on February 15, with excellent initial fertility. A myelogram on March 26 revealed the spinal cord compression caused by arthritic changes, and led to the veterinarians' recommendation for the surgical procedure. At that time, Three Chimneys wrote shareholders, "This procedure....will hopefully ensure that Seattle Slew will be able to live out his life safely and happily."

On April 2, Seattle Slew underwent surgery to fuse the joint between two verterbrae in his neck. The procedure, called an anterior inter-body fusion using a Bagby Basket, was performed at Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital by a veterinary team flown in the San Luis Rey Equine Hospital of California and Dr. John Hubble of Ohio State University.
"Seattle Slew recovered from anesthesia and got up like the great athlete that he is," commented Dr. Barrie Grant at the time of the surgery.

"An hour after he got out of recovery he was walking around his stall eating hay," related Dan Rosenberg since then. "If it had been you or me, we'd have been in traction with a morphine pump."

"The horse and his recuperative powers and his intelligence, which has made him an outstanding patient, are remarkable," commented Clay. "But great credit goes to Karen and Mickey Taylor and Tom Wade, and all of the Three Chimneys staff and veterinarians who have done their part, and more, to maximize his opportunities."

Mickey and Karen Taylor, majority owners of Seattle Slew now and 50% owners of Seattle Slew during his racing days, have been in Kentucky since the onset of his problems. With Tom Wade, his groom of 20 years, they have monitored hourly his recuperation.

"We've said it before, and we say it again: We will always seek to do what is best for Seattle Slew," said Rosenberg. "He, certainly, will be happy to return to the breeding shed. And as long as that is in his best interests, that is what we will make possible."
