General Information

The Ransom Center Reading Room
The Reading Room on the fifth floor of the Ransom Center.

Location and Hours

The Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center is located in the Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center building on the University of Texas campus, at the northeast corner of Guadalupe and 21st Streets (see map). The Center's Hazel H. Ransom Reading Room, located on the fifth floor, serves readers using manuscripts, rare books, and items from the Performing Arts and Art Collections. Ransom Center Photography materials may be viewed in the sixth floor viewing room.

The Reading Room is open Monday-Friday 9am-5pm and Saturday 9am-12pm. The Photography Viewing Room is open Monday-Friday 9am-5pm, although previously reserved photography books can be made available in the Reading Room on Saturdays. No material is pulled within a half hour of closing time. All HRC materials should be returned to the Circulation Desk 15 minutes before the Reading Room closes. The Reading Room and Photography Viewing Rooms are closed during intersessions, the third weeks of May and August, and on all University Holidays. Users outside Austin should confirm current library hours and days the Center is closed by contacting the Library. This is especially important while the Ransom Center reconstruction is in progress.

The Library Reading Room and Photography Viewing Room will be closed on these dates in 2002 and early 2003

  • November 28-December 1, 2002
  • December 21, 2002-January 1, 2003
  • January 4, 2003
  • January 11, 2003
  • January 18-20, 2003
  • March 22-30, 2003 (Tentative, for move to new facilities)

Please be aware that additional brief construction-related closings are possible until the project is completed. Up-to-date information will be posted to the web site.

All new patrons must register at the reception desk and show a valid a photo ID on arrival. Patrons of the Photography Collection must also view a five-minute slide presentation on the basics of handling and studying the materials in the collections. Once you are registered, you may enter the Reading Room, consult catalogs and finding aids, and request materials.

All materials in the Ransom Center collections are non-circulating. Requested materials, except those shelved in the Reading Room, are in closed stacks and will be delivered to your desk by the Center's staff. Books from the Knopf, Dobie, and Tinker Collections and certain materials from the Performing Arts and Art Collections require special paging and will be available for use the day after they are requested.

Classrooms

The Center has two rooms available for class use: the Library Seminar Room on the fifth floor and the Photography/Film Viewing Room on the sixth floor. Use of these rooms is limited to college and university classes making use of the Center's collections during class sessions. Arrangements for the use of the Seminar/Viewing Rooms must be made well in advance; a reservation form is available on this site. General tours of the Ransom Center for classes or other groups are currently unavailable because of construction.
