EAST TIMOR: FRETILIN CLEAR WINNER

FRETILINs leader, Mari Alkatiri, celebrated his partys victory, with 57% of the vote (208,531 votes cast), a majority of 170,000 votes over the second-placed political party, the Democratic Party, which received 9% of the vote (31,680 votes). However, FRETILIN does not have the two-thirds of assembly members it would need to form the Constitution alone and so Alkatiri will have to negotiate.

To note is the climate of tension between Alkatiri and the historic leader of the Timorese Resistance against the Indonesian Armed Forces, Xanana Gusmao. Gusmao did not congratulate FRETILIN on its victory, but rather gave a warm word to all the people of East Timor for having conducted their first democratic vote in such an exemplary way. Indeed, the ease with which the process ran earned the Maubere population of East Timor public praise by the United Nations special envoy, Sergio Vieira de Melo.

Relations between Xanana Gusmao and Alkatiri have always been tense. Gusmao will run for the Presidency next year and Alkatiri has already stated that if Gusmao does not distance himself substantially from the Democratic Party, FRETILIN will not support him. FRETILIN is a centre-left political party, between International Socialist and the United Kingdoms New Labour.

This means that FRETILIN and the Democratic Party will have to cooperate in the drawing up of the new Constitution, a fact which should contribute further towards the spirit of dialogue and constructive goodwill which characterizes this people at the birth of their nation.
