Normally, City Life doesn't review demos. They are merely rough masters of an artist's sound and shouldn't be judged. However, the Killers' recent three song sampler provides a great opportunity to talk about them, as they are one of the most intriguing new bands to kick up dust locally.
The Killers, thankfully, don't come across like any other band in town. The newbie act marries pop styles of British music with the lo-fi fuzz of modern indie rock, which is to say these guys don't listen to radio or even very many local bands. This is exemplified in "Mr. Brightside", the bands best and most popular song, which leads off this demo. It's energetic, New Wave garage a feel good, Strokes-esque anthem that ranks as one of the best local tracks in a long time.
Odd, though, that the song hasn't received local radio airplay and the other two on this demo have. However, "Under the Gun" - another catchy, retro-pop gem - and "Desperate" - a midtempo ballad that takes cues from Oasis, without the rip-off feel of peer act Psychic Radio - are welcome inclusions on what amounts to a sign of extremely promising things to come.
