Commandos
© Eidos
Everybody
loves to sock it to the Nazis, and Eidos gives us the chance to
rumble with the reich once again in their latest squad level wargame,
Commandos: Behind Enemy Lines. This time around we're getting a
real-time game in which you control a squad of grunts who feature
classic movie-style personalities and range from explosives experts
to green berets. Even though the game requires tactical planning and
some sound battlefield knowledge, it has a great presentation and
feel to it, and I was very surprised by how playable the game was.
Players
must undertake a series of missions to help the good guys win the
war, and these little scenarios are varied and challenging. There's
lots to see and do along the way, and most of the time your main
objective is pretty clear - to kick ass and take names. Putting the
smack down on the Germans requires some ingenuity, as you're taking a
limited squad of men into areas crawling with enemy activity, and the
quickest way to get yourself killed is to rush out with guns blazing.
Trying to figure out the best way to approach every situation, and
whether the scenario involves moving from place to place without
getting your head blown off or just sniping away at some poor goon,
you'll always have to think of the consequences of your actions.
As far
as graphics and sound go, Commandos is in tip-top shape, as the
miniature men, vehicles, and battlefields look absolutely fantastic.
It's great to see as much work was put into the aesthetic value of
this game as well as the playability, and the attention to detail
really shows. So what's the bottom line? With a solid game engine,
hours of single and multiplayer fun included, and a whole host of
features, you can't afford to pass this one up.
