First appearance of the Drill Team. Football half
time shows at Hawkins Stadium. Forty-four girls in red, white and blue
uniforms and saddle oxfords.
1949
Expanded to 65 members. Specializing in precision
marching and maneuvers.
1950
Cheerleader Jean Register (Tison) leads the
team for three years and does acrobatics up and down the field.
1951
Managers are Leticia Silver (George), Audrey
Rapone (Talmon) and Joyce Wilson.
1952
Joan Stewart (Gier) is named Drill-Squader of
the Year.
1953
Majorette Sue Redanz (Gould); Drill-Squader
of the Year was Sally Graham (Kneeshaw). First Drill Team Dance -
"Sailor's Hornpipe" taught by Miss Mabel Clark and first gun
drill with 16 member Rifle Squad.
1954
Majorette Janet Rapone (Logue) and Drill-Squader
Mona Winpisinger (Woods). Dances were "Strolling Thru the Park",
"Baby's Rocking Horse" and a cane dance to "Bye, Bye Blues."
1955
Majorette Janet Rapone (Roberts) and Drill-Squader
was Sandy Hilker (Alderton).
1956
Pearl White (McCraw) was the head majorette
and the Drill-Squader of the Year. They danced to the "Sailor's
Hornpipe."
1957
Dances were "Charleston," "Five Foot
Two" and "Tuxedo Junction" waving flags.
"COUNTY" dropped from name of school with opening
of new Palmetto High School.
1958
Majorettes were Linda Hall (Perez) and Anna
Clair Graves (Irwin). Drill Teamer of the Year was Derry Neal (Zoller).
Seventy-two members performed in the DeSoto Celebration Stadium Show
prior to the parade. Special dance was "Goofus," always a favorite.
1959
Sixteen handpicked members did a Gun
Drill and dances were "Charleston" and "Tea For Two."
Majorettes were Anna Graves (Irwin) and Diane Guthrie (Leach) and
DT of the Year was Fran Feagles (Clarke).
1960
Majorettes Margaret Anderson (Deem) and Kay
Whidden (Marine) and DT of the Year Janis Burris thought that the
Drill Team would be marching at the Orange Bowl over the holidays.
But, unfortunately that didn't come to pass for them. So they danced
to "Me and My Shadow" and "Don't Fence Me In" instead.
1961
Kay Whidden (Marine) and Janice Larsen (Ruppenthal)
were the Majorettes this year and Kay was also named Drill-Teamer
of the Year. They danced to the "St. Louis Blues March" and
performed a flag drill titled "Storm Warnings."
1962
These girls were so good that they had three
majorettes - Frances Rapone, Elaine Waldren (Andreasen) and Rita Jones
and two girls were named Drill-Squaders of the Year - Christine Evers
and Carol Thillberg (Nugent). They danced to "Tea For Two."
1963
Officially introduced as the SUGAR 'CANES. Majorettes
were Bonnie Loring and Diane Ward (Wingo). Jill Smith (Anderson) and
Claudia Parker were named Drill-Teamers of
the Year and the squad danced to "Ain't She Sweet" and a revised
"Goofus."
1964
Now at 81 members, Majorettes were Bonnie Loring,
Diane Ward (Wingo) and Debbie Combs (Carraway). Linda Snapp was the
year's Drill Teamer and Vicki Scott (Getman) was DT Captain. Dance
was "Balling the Jack."
1965
"Alley Cat, Ain't She Sweet?"
Battle Hymn of the Republic were the dances and Dot Oakley (Smith)
was the Captain. Majorettes were Debbie Combs (Carraway) and Sandi
Layton (Brosius) and Glenna Neumaster (Boggie) was Drill -Teamer of
the Year. The Squad again performed at the DeSoto Celebration Stadium
Show.
1966
"Sweet Georgia Brown," Self Expressions
and a Rifle Drill were the season's shows. Majorettes were Sandi Layton
(Brosius) and Sue Coffey (Keith) and DT of the Year was Lois Oakley
(Huene). Eighty girls now on Drill Team.
1967
Carolyn Blades (Burton) was the Captain this
year and Sue Coffey (Keith) and Margie Bailey (Jones) and Sue Coffey
and Bev Green (Norwood) shared the Drill Teamer of the Year award.
"Pass Me By" was the dance of the year.
1968
After 21 years, MILDRED EMMELHAINZ retires.
Maxine Thigpen, new director of Drill Team.
Majorettes were Margie Bailey (Jones) and Rita Ricamore (Springer)
and DT of the Year was Cathi Jarvis (Trescot). Dance of the year was
"Mexican Shuffle."
1969
"Chattanooga Choo Choo" came down the
field and Janice Blair (McCloud) was Drill Teamer of the Year. For
the first time two sisters were the majorettes - Rita Ricamore (Springer)
and Jan Ricamore (Baither).
1970
The dance was "Thoroughly Modern Millie"
and the majorettes were Pam Leetsma and Karen Ogle (Dring). Sandy
Forney was Captain of the Color Guard.
1971
Sally Kidder, Latin and Spanish teacher and
a former member of the FSU Seminole Band, took over as director of
the Drill Squad. Kim Kessler was the Team Captain and majorettes were
Pam Leetsma and Betsy Jo Munson. 25th Reunion of the Drill Team /
Sugar Canes and 102 members returned to dance the "Sailor's Hornpipe."
1972
A Rifle Guard of 20 was added to the Squad.
Majorettes were Betsy Jo Munson and Debbie Powell (Weichel).
1973
Teacher Linda Hartman becomes assistant director.
Officers were Becky Quimby (Offutt), Captain; Sue Boucher, 1st Lt.;
Jody Reed (Shinn), 2nd Lt. New uniforms for the Rifle Squad and a
new hair code for the Squad. On game days, this group could be recognized
by their bebop's!
1974
Over on the other side of the field, one of
the band drum majors was LINDA GARTLEY. Nine years later she would
become the director of the MHS Sugar Canes.
Highlights this season were the Senior's
"Batman Show," umbrella dance to "Sunny" and performing
in Tampa Stadium. Flags and rifles became a separate unit. Jan Simkus
was Captain of the Drill Team.
1975
Uniforms changed for the first time since 1947.
The new blue dresses, white boots, red/white gloves and headbands
were a great change for the Team.
Majorettes were Laurice Anderson (Garrett)
and Kris Dahlquist (Smith). A train was formed by the band, complete
with smoke and whistle and the "Chattanooga Choo-Choo" came
down the field. Other dances were "Windy," "The Horse
and Smoke On The Water."
1976
Bicentennial Show featuring "Yankee Doodle
Dandy," "Grand Ol' Flag" and "The Battle Hymn of the
Republic." Girls wore red, white and blue hats. Majorettes Laurice
Anderson (Garrett) and Beth Erickson. Everyone worked hard on rummage
and candy sales for the annual trip.
1977
Sally Kidder retires from Squad after seven
years. English teacher CeCe Smith takes over. New uniforms, hats,
monograms and shirts. The dance was "The Hustle."
1978
Majorettes were Carol Baity and Betty Jo LaVallee
(Cunard). Formation of the first Swing Flag unit.
1979
Betty Jo LaVallee (Cunard) and Cindy Ayers,
majorettes, lead a trip to Mexico. Sally Kidder returns as director.
The dance was "Baby Elephant Walk."
1980
Miss Beverly Barron became director and introduced
more uniforn changes and a more free style dancing approach. K-Gee
from SNL was the song and Cindy Ayers and Stephanie Davies (Miller)
were the Majorettes. Anne Ganey (Beasley) was the Homecoming Choice
of the Drill Team. The first "Spring Show" was a highlight of the
year.
1981
Danced to "Chorus Line" and went to Disney
World.
1982
Went to Tallahassee with the band in November
and to West Virginia in April.
November 16, 1982 - Miss Mildred Emmelhainz
passes away.
1983
Linda Gartley Boone named new director of the
Sugar Canes. The dance was "Pac Man Fever." Kim Hayo was Captain
and Peggy Escalante, Co-Captain for the year.
1984
Squad members won awards at the USF Super Star
Drill Team Camp and raised money with car washes and candy sales.
"On The Robert E. Lee" was the dance of the year. Captain Joanna
Cucci and Co-Captain Allison Teeter lead the girls on to the field
through the year.
1985
More candy sales, dances and the crowning of
the first MR. SUGARCANE, Tom Perkins. Music included "Curly Shuffle,"
" Maniac" and "Wanna Be Startin Something?" Allison
Teeter was named Captain and this year the joint Co-Captains were
Kristi Binkley (Anderson) and Karen Lindo.
1986
Captain was Kristi Anderson (Binkley) and dances
were "Strut," "The Heat Is On" and "Easy Lover."
Karen Lindo was Assistant Captain.
1987
Disney World in November and Orange Bowl Parade
in December. Dances were "Eye of the Tiger" and "Johnny
B. Goode." Conducted the annual Fashion Forecast and had candy
sales and a dance.
First appearance in the National Dance Team Championships. Bunny Bradbury
(Roberts) was Captain and Assistant Captain was Carolyn Quintero.
1988
Danced at MCC basketball games, had car washes,
sold M & M's and had a fashion show. Captain was Kelly Hayo and
the motto was "The Drill Team Never Quits". Assistant Captain was
Cathi Pomar.
1989
Entire Marching Band gets new look. Terrific!!
Christin Tinsworth was Captain this year and Stephanie Gerard was
Assistant Captain.
1990
Went to Universal Dance Camp at UCF, Disney
World Parade in November and the National Dance Team Championships
in Orlando where the group placed fifth. The DT Captain was April
Maxwell, Co-Captain was Diane Hartmann and the girls danced to "Tequila,"
"Cabaret" and "If My Friends Could See Me Now."
1991
Officers were Jennifer Schooley, Stephanie Bush,
Nicole North and Sherri McKee. Dances were "Here Comes the Hammer,"
"Poison Ivy" and "Turtle Power" and Mr. Sugarcane was
Larry Hoffman.
1992
Nicole North, Captain; Sherri McKee, Co-Capt.
Spring Show had a Chorus Line Theme with tops hats and white Tux coats.
Placed first at Universal Dance Camp
in July in Orlando. Received third place at National Dance Competition
in February at Sea World with an outstanding, crowd-appealing kick
routine. Chad Mize was named Mr. Sugarcane at the Spring Show in May.
1993
Christie May and Valerie Klinker were the Lieutenants. Sugar
Cane Extravaganza in October - dances performed, fashions modeled
and Jeff DeJongh was named Mr. Sugarcane. Sea World in Orlando in
February for national competition. Placed first at Universal Dance
Camp in July. Captain was Estella Freeman.
1994
Thirty-two Sugar Canes kicked across the field
led by Captain Christie May and Co-Captain Valerie Klinker. The girls
added dazzle, glitter and spirit to the Hurricane competitive nature
and placed fifth in the National Dance Team Competition, high kick
division.
1995
Captain was Susan Schooley, Co-Captain was Christina
Manali and the place was USF with the Universal Dance Camp where they
won a Superior rating. Also performed at State JC basketball games
in March.
1996
For the first time the Color Guard division
and the Sugar Canes performed a joint routine at the football games.
The Cane Echo stated that "They are more than a name, they are a team!"
Kate Alcott, Captain; Jennifer Fischer,
Co-Captain. Went to UDA Nationals at MGM Studios, placed 3rd in Kick
(Thunder) and were seen on the ESPN TV show.
1997
Celebrating fifty years of Drill Team - Sugar
Canes, this year the girls elected Charissa May as captain and Patty
Lambertson as co-captain. Lieutenants are Caroline Berry and Kendra
Blaker and dance committee members are Carrie May and Lauren Larowe.
They performed at the Reunion Night
dance with the returning Alumni as they joined together for One
from Chorus Line. Other dances were a jazz version of "Give Me
Some Lovin'," a kick routine to "Respect" and a pom dance
to "Good Golly, Miss Molly."
1998
Charissa May, Captain; Patty Lambertson, Co-Captain. Went to UDA camp
at Stetson University in Deland.
1999
Kendra Blaker, Captain; Caroline Berry, Co-Captain. Summer camp at
UDA USF Tampa. Tenth straight year of Superiors at FBA district festival.
"Ho' About Time " theme with clocks and more clocks. Local newspaperman
Vin Mannix performs "California Girls".
2000
Jane Simpson, Captain; Jen Smith, Co-Captain. UDA Camp at Rollins
Co llege, Winter Park, Andrew Lloyd Werber was featured show with
Phantom and King Herod.
2001
Kiernan Wilkins, Captain; Heather Hancock, C0-Captain. UDA Camp at
Stetson, Deland - won Superior trophy again. Mr. Sugar Cane named
- Adam VerCammon.
2002
Le'ni Rosbury, Captain; Christelle Perrey, Co-Captain. UDA Camp at
Rollins College winning 1st Place with "The Heat Is On". Spring Show
Special featured a celebration of 20 years of Sugar Cane history under
the leadership of Linda Boone
