Andrei Amalrik. Dissident publicist, playwright, and art collector. In exile 1964-1966. In 1969, published in the West his essay Will the Soviet Union Survive to 1984? First Soviet dissident to give a televized interview for an American audience. Arrested and sentenced to three years of labor camp. On the last day of his term, sentence increased to another three years of labor camp. As a result of his 117 days' hunger strike his sentence was changed to three years of exile.
Released in 1975, emigrated to Western Europe in 1976. Died in a car accident near Guadalajara, Spain on 11/12/1980.
