Cast of hundreds weighs in on debate over workshops

Should casting workshops for actors be permitted to charge participation fees, or are they all illegal "paid audition" operations? These and others were the questions du jour at an all-day public forum at the Van Nuys, Calif., state building analyzing state-proposed guidelines for casting workshops, which recently have come under fire.

In January, the U.S. Department of Labor standards enforcement division found that the practices of casting director workshops were in violation of state law that prohibits payment in exchange for applied employment.

Last month, regional attorney Thomas Kerrigan sent letters to 20 casting workshops demanding that they cease and desist from these practices.

On Tuesday, about 150 people at the state building were treated to a packed list of speakers that was heavily weighted with casting directors and actors defending the workshops.

Peter Kiefer writes for The Hollywood Reporter.
