CD Workshops Get Hearing

The state Department of Labor has scheduled a free-ranging hearing on the controversial subject of casting director cold-reading workshops, against several operators of which it issued a cease-and-desist order in February. The all-day session is scheduled for July 9 at the State Building at 6150 Van Nuys Blvd. in Van Nuys. Thomas Kerrigan, regional attorney with Labor Standards Enforcement Division, told Variety that "all views" of workshops would be included, but added, "We are not looking to change the state law." Workshop owners are likely to tout the educational value of their services, in which casting professionals typically receive a stipend to view students' work--a money exchange which, Kerrigan warned, violates state law.
