Her mismatched tights may be better suited to climbing trees than ascending Hollywood's best-dressed lists, but when it comes to hair, Pippi Longstocking is right on the money. Braidsin every variety, from cornrows to coils worthy of a Swiss milkmaidare adding a funky twist to the straightforward styles normally seen on the red carpet. "Braids can be very sexy and elegant," says Giovanni Giuliano, the L.A.-based stylist who created Gwyneth Paltrow's neo-French braids for the Shallow Hal premiere. "The more you play, the better it looks." To create Paltrow's style, Giuliano worked mousse through wet hair, blow-dried it, then divided it into three sections. He French-braided the sections on either side of her head, joining the two at the nape of her neck with an elastic band. He then pinned the middle section flat to the crown, letting her loose locks fall down her back. For more intricate styles, like the cornrows worn by Beyonce Knowles, you'll need to visit a salon. And prepare to wait for these plaits: Prep time can stretch to eight hours.
