Word of the Week: Abscission

Welcome to Wiktionary, a collaborative project to produce a free multilingual dictionary and thesaurus in every language, complete with meanings, etymologies and pronunciations. Wiktionary is the lexical companion to the open content encyclopaedia Wikipedia. We started on December 12, 2002 and are already working on 1437 entries in the English version, with more being added and improved all the time. Anyone, including you, can edit any definition right now, without even having to log in. See the Wiktionary FAQ for more background information about the project, and the help page for information on how to use and contribute to Wiktionary.

The content of Wiktionary is covered by the GNU Free Documentation License, which means that it is free and will remain so forever. See Wiktionary:Copyrights for the details.

Please note that this is the English Wiktionary: while it aims to describe all words of all languages, the definitions and descriptions are in English only. Similar Wiktionaries in other languages will be set up gradually.

For an example of an article in the English Wiktionary defining a non-English word, please refer to frei. In order to find a German definition of that word, it will be necessary to resort to the German Wiktionary when that becomes available.
