Contributors's Ancestors

Two members of my family were on this voyage. They were William Henry Thorne and Elizabeth Watts Russell Thorne Correspondence 2/16/02 passenger Loney I am the Great Grandaughter of Ann Loney (17) from County Armagh who sailed out on the Sebastopol in 1863 Gravesend to Lyttelton with their brother Joseph and sister Jane. All are listed in the itinery. Ann was from Ireland and came to make a better life for herself here in NZ. She married Alfred Ford a year after her arrivial and they had 4 children - Evelyn (my grandmother) Ada, Harry and Ernest. Ann lived to be 90 years of age and the dearest, sweetest lady. She went dairy farming with Alfred at Rapaki and because the Lyttelton tunnel had not yet been established they carried their produce over the hill to Christchurch. They finally settled in Papanui Christchurch where her grandaughter (my mother) still lives. I have a photo of Ann Loney (Ford) and I will always cherish the memory. Dawn Browne Correspondence 06/14/01 BILLENS BILLENS William E on the SEBASTOPOL 21 May 1863 arrival in Lyttelton. He arrived in Canterbury NZ to be with his brother Robert BILLENS who arrived on the ship CLONTARF January 1859. He may not have married and he died in the early 1900's in South Canterbury (not confirmed by death certificate). BILLENS made some of the early lamps in Lyttelton and were also lamp makers having a business in Chch that still has their name on it. ARRIVAL OF SEBASTOPOL
The Press, May 23rd 1863

The ship Sebastopol, Captain D Taylor, arrived in Lyttelton harbour, from London, on Thursday evening about 5 p.m., after a protracted passage of over 100 days. She left Gravesend on the 17th January, and did not clear the land until the 9th February, experiencing heavy gales all the time. Her passenger list includes 17 in the 1st, and 27 in the 2nd cabin, besides 205 assisted Government emigrants. The passengers speak highly of the Captain, surgeon, and officers, and a few days before arrival presented them with testimonials, the one given to the Captain consisting of a purse of sovereigns and an address containing 230 signatures. This ship has been exceedingly free from sickness, no deaths having occurred during the voyage, but 3 births and one marriage. During the early part of the passage she spoke several ships bound to India and China.
Christchurch Office of the National Archives NZ reference IM CH 4/48 (Shipping Lists), the original is held in the Wellington Office.
