[AGQ2] is not a clan; it is a collection of friendly competitors, online gamers, computer geeks, and smartasses who are always willing to give advice about anything related to Quake2, no matter how remotely, and then will proceed to fire a Railgun slug up your nether regions.

Anyone who holds to the basic tenets of good sportsmanship online and is a regular reader &/or contributor to the AGQ2 newsgroup can use the [AGQ2] tag after their name while playing online. This is simply done so that we can spot each other on the various servers.

[!!!] Since the creation of the Alt.Games.Quake3 newsgroup and the more recent release of Quake 3 Arena, many AGQ2 members have been frequenting the AGQ3 newsgroup (just as many AGQ members migrated to AGQ2 two years ago). This brought up the point - "What tag should we use when we play Quake3?" After much debate (well, not really, but it sounds good, doesn't it?), it was sort of decided that we would use [AGQx] as a tag, to keep from limiting ourselves to any specific iteration of Quake or AGQ newsgroup; plus, the "x" looks cool ;^)

GROUND RULES for the AGQ2 NEWSGROUP

DO NOT:

Breaking the preceding rules will probably get you flamed in one way or another and most likely won't result in any sort of valid answer. Generally speaking, the AGQ2 regularly contributing members are a pretty reasonable bunch, but some of them have hair-triggers when it come to certain subjects. Take your chances if you wish, but if you do get flamed, don't bitch about it. You've been warned. By following these rules, you've made this group a much friendlier public forum. Thanks.

ALT.GAMES.QUAKE2 Frequently Asked Questions

++ || Introduction || ++

This is a collection of Frequently Asked Questions (and answers) from the alt.games.quake2 newsgroup. Most of this information has been compiled from reading posts in the newsgroup and gathering other info from here and there. This FAQ was originally created by David Henry. He quit posting it long ago, Morgan Vincent took it over as a service to newbies and the newsgroup. I, Apathy, have taken up the torch. It has been (and continues to be) highly modified from it's original form in order to make it somewhat more informative and up-to-date.

[1a] Where can I find out about Q2 on the Internet?

There are many, many Q2 sites on the Internet. The main, general one that I have found to be best is PlanetQuake. It also contains links to many other Q2 sites. Other gaming portal news sites like Blue's News and Voodoo Extreme constantly report the latest news on Quake2, other 3D games, hardware info., etc.

The Quake 2 sections of the following massive website/databases will have virtually any Quake 2 file you're looking for:

[1b] What does - - - - - mean?

This is a list of terms and acronyms commonly used on AGQ2. It is not sorted alphabetically because that would split up groups like weapons.

Q2: Quake 2 - A (game/way of life) by id Software. The subject of the newsgroup on which this FAQ is based. IMHO, the best game ever made in the history of the world. (until Quake3 Arena anyway and even then...who knows?)

NG: NewsGroup - alt.games.quake2 for example.

AGQ2: alt.games.quake2 - A NG dedicated to the discussion of Q2 and Jerry Springer-like personal problems. ;^)

OT: Off-Topic - Denotes when a post is actually off-topic (i.e. has little or nothing to do with Quake2). Also, the official clan headed by Frank Rizzo which consists of members of the old AGQ2 pseudo-clan.

FAQ: Frequently Asked Questions - A list of questions and answers. This file for example.

Clan: A group of Q2 players that band together for tournaments etc.

Frag: A kill of another player in MP Q2. You can get a negative frag in Q2 by killing yourself.

MP: Multi-Player - Q2 can be played in MP mode over the Internet or a LAN.

DM: Deathmatch - A style of Q2 play that in general lets players fight against other players. See question [6a] for more information about different types of Q2 mods.

CTF: Capture The Flag - A style of Q2 play that lets you play in teams working towards a common goal: Capturing The Flag. See question [5a] for more information about CTF.

LMCTF: Loki's Minions CTF - A specific CTF Mod. See question [6a] for more information about LMCTF.

Lag: A slow down in play while the modem or computer tries to catch up with the network. Sometimes this will cause your player or the whole game to freeze for a while. Caused by a high ping.

JOD: Jack O' Death or Phone Jack of Death - This is the icon that comes up in Q2 to indicate network problems. Usually caused by lots of lag. The chances are that by the time the JOD disappears you will be dead. {PIT}

PJOD: See JOD.

PING: Packet Internet Groper - A measure of how long it takes information to get from your computer to the server you're playing on and back. {Nehalem} The lower it is the better. Usually a ping of under 100 is considered low and anything above is considered high. See section [9] for more information about ping. 200-300 is average for a 28.8/33.6 modem user.

LP(B|W|*): Low Pinging Bitch/Bastard/Bragger/Wussy/Winner - Someone who has a low ping in MP Q2. There are too many variations to list them all.

HP(B|W|*): High Pinging Bitch/Bastard/Bait/Whiner - Someone who has a high ping in MP Q2. There are too many variations to list them all.

B: Blaster - One of the standard weapons in Q2.

SG: Shotgun - One of the standard weapons in Q2.

SSG: Super Shotgun - One of the standard weapons in Q2.

HG: Hand Grenade - One of the standard weapons in Q2.

GL: Grenade Launcher - One of the standard weapons in Q2.

MG: Machine Gun - One of the standard weapons in Q2.

CG: Chain Gun - One of the standard weapons in Q2.

RL: Rocket Launcher - One of the standard weapons in Q2.

HB: Hyper Blaster - One of the standard weapons in Q2.

RG: Rail Gun - One of the standard weapons in Q2.

BFG-10K: Big Fucking Gun 10000 (I don't think this is the official definition) - One of the standard weapons in Q2. This weapon is sometimes disabled on Q2 servers because some people do not like it.

Gib/Giblets: Body Parts. The red chunks you see when you get powerful frag.

Modification: Modification to the Q2 game. For example CTF or Chaos. See question [6a] for more information about modifications.

Mod: See Modification. {DeHackEd}

Rune: Like power ups. There are many different types depending on which mod you are playing. Some half the damage taken, some double the damage given.

Artifact: See Runes.

Tech: See Runes.

FPH: Frags Per Hour - On Lithium servers and many other mods part of a players score is the Frags Per Hour. This helps to let you know how you are doing even if you join the board half way through.

See question [6a] for more information about Lithium.

FPS: Frames Per Second - The number of video frames per second. How many times Q2 updates itself every second. See question [9e] for more information about FPS. -or- First Person Shooter - The genre of games into which Q2 falls.

FOV: Field Of Vision - A setting in Q2, which affects how much you can see out of the corners of your 'eyes'. See question [5c] for more information about fov.

GG: Good Game {Shuggy}

Bot: A computer playing on a server that looks, acts, and works just like a human controlled player. Can be useful for practice or just for fun. Another kind of bot, a proxy bot, is a cheat, that will do your aiming and firing for you. {DeHackEd} See question [4i] for more information on bots.

Camping/Qamping: Staying in the same place for a long time in MP Q2. Waiting for someone to walk into your crosshairs. Some people see this as bad play style or even cheating. Others see it as just another part of the game that you must learn to deal with.

[1e] I've heard that there are maps to all the levels? Where?

I think the word "map" confuses some folks. Many folks call the actual playable levels "maps" rather than saying "levels". The words are synonymous really. Map (level) authors especially have a tendency to always say "map" instead of "level".

If there are, in fact, maps of all the standard Q2 levels I'm not aware of them.

[2b] How do I run Quake2 without the CD always being present?

Up to Q2 3.14 you were required to have the Q2 CD in the drive when playing (or at least starting) Q2. This requirement has been disabled in Q2 3.15+. {Chavez}

[2c] I bought the first Mission Pack, "The Reckoning", which comes with the Q2 3.15 patch, but I do not seem to have the map that id released with 3.15 "Match1."

You're right. You don't. Although the mission pack comes with the Q2 3.15 patch it does not come with the "Match1" map that was included with the official id version of the Q2 3.15+ patch.

[2e] * Q2 -or- a Mission Pack won't install properly! What do I do?

Check the Regional Settings (Control Panel/Regional Settings applet) in Windows and make sure the setting on the Regional Settings tab is the same as the version of Q2 (or mission pack) you're trying to install. For instance, an English (United States) version of Q2 may not allow you to install it on a machine with the Regional Settings set to English (United Kingdom). In that case temporarily change your settings to match your version of Q2 or mission pack.

[2g] How do I install levels I've downloaded off the 'Net?

Most levels include a readme file in the .zip which explains the procedure. Generally, you unzip the .zip and you'll find a readme.txt file and a whatever.bsp file. Move the whatever.bsp over to your \quake2\baseq2\maps directory. Then start Quake2 with the command line: "quake2 +map whatever". Don't type the .bsp extension. Or you can start Q2 normally and simply pull down the console (the ~ key) and type "map whatever". Also without the .bsp extension.

The .bsp file is the actual playable map. Some authors will also include a .map file with the same name as the .bsp. This is the source file. It's actually just a plain ASCII text file that can be either loaded into a text editor and edited directly or loaded into a level editor like BSP, WorldCraft, or Qoole and edited graphically.

Some authors package their levels into .pak files. The .pak usually contains textures (.wal), sounds (.wav), or whatever other custom files the level depends on. In this case put the .pak file into your \quake2\baseq2 directory. Rename it if it conflicts with any .pak files you already have. All .pak files must be named pak[0-9].pak in order for Q2 to recognize them. Q2 reads these files in order from lowest number to highest number, so if you have a file in a lower numbered pak with the same name as one in a higher numbered pak, the file in the higher numbered pak is the one that will be used in the game.

[2h] "Error: Couldn't load pics/colormap.pcx" ???

This usually happens when you try to start Q2 from a directory other than Q2's base directory, "\games\quake2". Start up a DOS prompt (click Start, Run..., and type "command" and hit Enter) and type: "cd \games\quake2" and "quake2 +set whatever parameters you want"

-or-

Check your ...\quake2\baseq2\pak0.pak file. Sometimes the install does not copy it all. It should be 175MB (183,997,730 bytes) in the properties. Just get a clean copy from your quake2 CD - you dont have to do a new install. {pop}

[2i] Since installing my VooDoo3/TNT2/GeForce etc. I get the phone jack icon constantly!

The incredible framerate of the 3D graphics card is flooding your connection with too much data. Bring down the console (the ~ key) and type: "cl_maxfps 25" What that does is cap your framerate at 25 frames per second. Still smooth to the eyes, but no longer destroying your connection.

[2j] How do I play a demo?

Put your demo file, "whatever.dm2", in /quake2/baseq2/demos. If you don't have a baseq2/demos directory, use Explorer or the mkdir command to make it. Start up Q2 and at the console (the ~ key) type either:

"map whatever.dm2"

-or-

"demomap whatever.dm2".

While I don't usually try to plug shareware here, some programs are so useful that they're well worth checking out. DemoPlay will allow you to launch any Quake/Quake2-engine demo directly from a double-click in Windows (it also will serve as a cool screen saver):

[2k] How do I extract files from and/or modify a .pak file?

Here are a couple of the best utilities that allow you to work with .pak files. While you can use WinBSPC to work with .pak files, I've found that the ability to view models, listen to .wav files, and view .pcx files from within these programs' Explorer-like interfaces provides a much more convenient alternative:

[3c] I get an error about "File Not Found" whenever I connect to a server. What does this mean and how can I disable it?

It means that the server does not have the file that it is trying to send. It is really just a warning. You cannot disable it in Q2 3.15. In 3.17+ you can control auto download from the multi-player setup menu. You can also control this from the console (and, therefore, your AUTOEXEC.CFG file. The following commands can be used in the console with a 1 or a 0 as a parameter. For example "allow_download 1". {Hell Hound}

allow_download - global download on/off
allow_download_players - players download on/off
allow_download_models - models download on/off
allow_download_sounds - sounds download on/off
allow_download_maps - maps download on/off

[3d] When I am playing multi-player I see big white spots on the front of all the other players. Why?

You need to install the VWEP patch. Which makes other players weapons visible. You can get it at:

The full version of the 3.20 patch already includes VWEP for the male, female, cyborg, and crakhor models.

[4b] What is the ZBot &/or RatBot, and how can I prevent someone from using it to pummel me big time.

First of all, don't confuse a practice bot with a proxy bot.

The ZBot is a form of proxy bot written by a very talented programmer named Zappa. It loads and acts between the client and the server. It analyzes the packets (data sent between client and server) and inserts "aim" and "attack" packets for the client when it receives "player" packets from the server. The original ZBot had two forms of protection built in. Any player using ZBot would have his/her name prefixed with the characters "[ZBot]" so that anyone playing against one would know it. Also built into ZBot is some auto disconnect code. So that if any user chats "no bots please" the ZBot will disconnect. Unfortunately these two preventative measures have been hacked out of most versions of ZBot now floating around. So it becomes hard to tell whether you are playing a really good player or a ZBot. Playing with this kind of bot is considered cheating. This is not the same as a bot like EraserBot which acts as a trainer. {Matt Hope}

Many servers now use admin. programs that will attempt to detect a proxy Bot user and kick or block him from the server. While the detection methods are far from perfect (i.e. false positives, bot-users getting around the detection method, etc.), players that use bot-protected servers report far fewer instances of suspected bot activity.

While we're on this topic, please try to remember that just because you may be getting beaten badly in a match by someone with a higher ping who seems to making some unbelievable shots doesn't automatically mean that your opponent should be suspected of using a bot. There are many fine players out there who have practiced this game more hours than you and me put together. They have honed their timing and moves to a degree that is almost flawless. Rest assured in the fact that there is always someone else out there on the net playing Q2 who can wax their ass seven ways from Sunday, too. A typical bot-user, however, will display extreme jerkiness when moving around as the proxy bot scans for targets. Also, the RatBot will automatically respond to any player saying the word "bot" from the console with the phrase, "Please help me: What is a bot?" Hacked versions of the RatBot, however, do exist and will not respond with this message.

...such is the way of the cheater, young grasshopper; it is your duty to teach him the error of his ways...most forcefully...

[4c] My saved games don't work anymore now that I have upgraded. What can I do?

Check out Cerberus's version switcher:

http://www.quakefiles.com/packshack/files/q2ver_switch.zip

That really ought to be the best way to go about getting back to your old saved-games while still being able to use the latest patch.

-or-

You can cheat your way back to where you were with "god", "give all", and "map whatever_map_you_were_on". The problem with this though is that you don't wind up exactly where you were with exactly the same amount of ammo and having accomplished the same, exact things. Your choice.

[4h] Is it cheating if someone uses a tiny or invisible model?

No matter what the model looks like the target bounding box is still the same size. The player will have an advantage if he is using a small model just because he will be harder to see. But if you shoot at where a normal male player's head would be, you will still hit him or her. The way to defeat this is to remove the model from your Quake2\baseq2\players directory.  This causes the game to default to the male/grunt player model and skin. Alternately, if you're playing against someone who doesn't have the model you're using, they'll only see a standard "male/grunt" model. This is true even if the other player has the model , but doesn't have the specific skin being used (which explains why you sometimes see "grunts" making sounds like crakhors, females, cyborgs, etc.)

[4j] What servers do you AGQ2 guys play on?

You'll need the Q2plug for Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator found at:

ftp://ftp.cdrom.com/pub/idgames/idstuff/quake2/misc/q2plug.zip

to get current server stats from these pages:

http://www.pchotshots.com/agq2/servers.html http://www.quakefiles.com/supertech/server.html

Some AGQ2 members have a list of common AGQ2 servers in their signatures when they post messages to the newsgroup too.

[4l] Why is there always so much trash-talking?

Talking "smack" or "trash-talking" really bothers some people, but others don't seem to mind it all and even go so far as to say that it's part of the game. This article explains the issue better than I can here, although I think it's kind of strange to equate etiqutte with a multiplayer FPS:

[5] Alias/Macro/Binding Questions

[5a] When I edit my settings in the CONFIG.CFG file my settings get lost the next time I play. Why?

The CONFIG.CFG file was not made to be edited by the end user. It is overwritten by Q2 every time it starts. If you want to store your settings in a more permanent manner use the AUTOEXEC.CFG file. If it does not exist then create it. If you create it using Windows 95 notepad, make sure it has the correct extension after you create it. Sometimes notepad will add an extra extension to a file, for example:

AUTOEXEC.CFG.TXT

[5b] How do I make an alias/macro?

An alias is just another name for a command or a group of commands. For example the following will create an alias called speak which when executed will issue the command "say Die FragPuppet!!!". This alias is then bound to the x key so that whenever the user presses x it will execute the alias.

alias speak "say Die FragPuppet!!!"
bind x speak

See question [5f] for more information about aliases.

[5c] How can I make an alias to zoom in for me?

The best way will store your old settings first so it can restore them when it is done.

alias +sniper "fov 65; wait; fov 30; sensitivity 2"
alias -sniper "fov 65; wait; fov 90; sensitivity 6"
bind CTRL "+sniper"

This alias will Sniper Zoom when you hold the bound key down and restore your settings when the bound key is released. This assumes that your current FOV is 90 and your mouse sensitivity is 6. Adjust them to suit your needs. See question [5f] for more information about aliases.

[5d] How can I make an alias to select my best weapon for me?

The following alias will select your "best" weapon with the hit of one key. This is useful for mods that do not have a "best weapon" option. This version of the alias will reset your msg setting when done.

alias bw0 "use Shotgun;use Machinegun;use Super Shotgun;use Chaingun"
alias bw1 "use Hyperblaster;use Railgun;use Rocket Launcher"
alias +bw "use blaster"
alias -bw "set msg-$msg;msg 3;bw0;bw1;msg $msg-"
bind x +bw

-or-

Try Cerberus's best weapon alias:

alias bp "use Blaster; wait"
alias bfg "use BFG10K; wait"
alias sg "use Shotgun; wait"
alias gl "use Grenade Launcher; wait"
alias mg "use Machinegun; wait"
alias ssg "use Super Shotgun; wait"
alias rg "use Railgun; wait"
alias hb "use Hyperblaster; wait"
alias cg "use Chaingun; wait"
alias rl "use Rocket Launcher; wait"
alias cbw "bp; bfg; sg; gl; mg; rg; hb; ssg; cg; rl"
bind SPACE "cbw"

-and lastly-

A simplified best weapon alias for less demanding folk:

bind SPACE "use Shotgun; use Machinegun; use Chaingun; use HyperBlaster; use Super Shotgun; use Rocket Launcher"

Be sure to join the broken lines if you copy and paste the alias to your autoexec.cfg.

See question [5f] for more information about aliases.

[5e] How can I make an alias to grapple for me?

The following aliases can be used to turn the grapple on and off on different types of Q2 games.

On Lithium II:

alias hook0 "hook;alias hooks hook1;echo Hook Connect..."
alias hook1 "unhook;alias hooks hook0;echo Hook
Disconnect..." alias hooks hook0 bind x hooks

On LMCTF:

alias hook0 "+hook;alias hooks hook1;echo Hook Connect..."
alias hook1 "-hook;alias hooks hook0;echo Hook
Disconnect..." alias hooks hook0 bind x hooks

Just replace the x with the key that you want to use to toggle the grappling hook on and off. See question [5f] for more information about aliases.

http://www.captured.com/thebind
http://www.planetquake.com/f176
http://www.quake2.com/tq2cc

[5g] My weapon has disappeared from the screen. How do I get it back?

Make sure the gun is in you right or left hand not in the center with the "hand" command. For example "hand 0" for right or "hand 1" for left.

Also, make sure "cl_gun" is 1 not 0. For example "cl_gun 1".

Also, make sure your FOV is 90 or your gun will not be displayed. For example "fov 90".

[5h] How do I take a screenshot?

F12 is the default the key for screenshots. If you have changed you config or want to bind a different key to screenshots then bind a key to "screenshot". {The Gameplayer} For example:

bind x screenshot

Where x is the key you want to use to take a screenshot.

Be careful, however. If you try to take a screenshot during a server-side mod game for which you do not have the appropriate subdirectory under Quake2 (e.g. Quake2\gxmod), the game may lock up and your system may crash.

[5i] How do I run different config files for different games?

The best way I have found to do this is to create one main config file with all my game independent binding and aliases in it with the same name as my Q2 alias. And then a specific one for each game. I keep all these files in my baseq2 directory and call the correct ones from each games autoexec.cfg file. Like this:

\quake2

\baseq2

config.cfg autoexec.cfg rigby.cfg (generic stuff) rigby- lithium.cfg (Lithium specific stuff) rigby-lmctf.cfg (LMCTF specific stuff)

\lithium

config.cfg autoexec.cfg (calls rigby.cfg and rigby- lithium.cfg)

\lmctf

config.cfg autoexec.cfg (calls rigby.cfg and rigby- lmctf.cfg)

[6] Modification Questions

[6a] What are all these different Q2 mods about?

The following is a list of some of the more popular Q2 mods. My apologies if one is left out. If you want it included please send me a message telling me where the web site is.

Action - All new weapons, maps, skins. The emphasis is on realism. Home Page: Action Quake

All-Star CTF 2 - A CTF mod which includes a lot of good new and classic CTF maps. Home Page: All Start CTF

Balance of Power - A DM mod where your strength and hit resistance are based on your ping. So the HPB are harder to kill while the LPB are easier. Home Page: Balance of Power

Chaos Mod- A basic DM mod with MANY new weapons. For example a flash grenade that will blind your enemies, a guided rocked launcher, and poison, which is the most excellent effect I have seen in a mod so far. Home Page: Chaos Mod

CTF2 - id Software's CTF mod that comes with the Q2 3.15+ update. Not as popular as LMCTF. See [1b] for more information about CTF. Home Page: CTF2

Expert CTF - A CTF mod with a off-hand grappling hook and more balanced weapons. Home Page: Expert CTF

Freeze Tag - A team DM mod where when you die you freeze until someone from your team unfreezes you. While you are frozen you yell out cool things like "Please, kill me...". Home Page: Freeze Tag

Holy Wars - A DM mod. You start the game as a "sinner" and are unable to score frags. Your goal is to get the "halo" and become a saint. If it's on the ground, grab it. If an opponent has it, kill him! Home Page: Holy Wars

Jail Break - A Team mod. When you are killed you are put in jail until freed or your whole team is captured. Home Page: Jail Break

King of the Hill - A DM mod where you have to Defend the "hill". Home Page: King of the Hill

Lithium II - A server side DM mod, no download necessary. Adds some extras to the basic deathmatch. Like an offhand grappling hook, runes, Qamping Killer. And a nice menu front end. See [1b] for more information about runes. Home Page: Lithium II
Home Page: Lithium II On Planetquake

LMCTF - A CTF mod that includes an offhand grappling hook, runes, and team radio messages. Comes with some excellent skins and sound effects. The best CTF I have played. See [1b] for more information about CTF. See [1b] for more information about runes. Home Page: LMCTF

NIQ - A DM mod where everyone has only on weapon at a time with regenerating ammo and health. Home Page: NIQ

Rocket Arena II - A team DM Mod. Where all players start with all weapons and lots of ammo. The teams face off until there is only one left standing. Once you are out of it you get to observe the continuing battle and cheer for your team. Home Page: Rocket Arena II

SuperHeroes II - A DM mod where you get to choose your powers. You can choose to fly, have special attacks etc. Comes with some nice superhero skins too. Home Page: SuperHeroes II

ThunderWalker CTF - A CTF mod. Home Page: ThunderWalker CTF

Vanilla CTF - A CTF mod. Home Page: Vanilla CTF

Weapons Factory - A CTF mod where you can choose which class to be from nurse to cyborg. New weapons, decoys, and a jetpack. This mod is kind of like the old Team Fortress mod for Quake. Home Page: Weapons Factory

OSP Tourney DM - A server-side mod that allows a lot of flexibility in creating virtually any Team or FFA configuration you could want with the added support of some very detailed stats. Home Page: OSP Tourney

and, again, just for grins:

Jeff K.'s Ultra Super Mega Kewl Mod - You've gotta' see it to believe it ;^) Home Page: Ultra Super Mega Kewl Mod

[6b] Where can I get Q2 mods?

You can get most of these mods, or find links to them, at the following sites:

PlanetQuake
ModCentral
Captured.com
Quake Links
Jumpstation

[6c] Can I run two different mods at once? (ie: Eraser+Lithium; etc.)

No. Each mod uses it's own dynamic link library file (gamex86.dll in the respective mod's directory). The only way to combine two mods would be for one or both programmers to release their respective source code and manually combine it and hope that it compiles without errors :).

Some mods are being built specifically to combine the features of two or more popular mods (e.g. EraserUltra - http://ultra.quake2.co.uk/). This is a lot of work though and most mod authors have neither the time nor the interest in combining their mod with anyone else's.

[7] Model & Skin Questions

[7a] Where can I get skins/models for Q2?

The following sites as well as many others (search engines) have a lot of good skins and models.

[7b] What happens if I play with models and skins that others do not have?

If you are in a game with a model and/or skin that another player does not have, the server will send that player the skin and/or model if the server has the files and if the client has auto download turned on. If the server does not have the file you must ask him or her to get it or ask him if you can send it to him or her.

[7c] What does tris mean, as in tris.md2?

There are two md2 (Model 2 - A Q2 model) by default for each player. tris.md2 and weapon.md2. The tris.md2 is for the player model tris means triangles, like the triangles that the polygon player model is built from. {>>>Nehalem} And the weapon.md2 is obviously the weapon. Extra models that display the character model carrying a specific weapon (i.e. "vwep" with Rocket Launcher, with Hyper Blaster, etc.) may be included as well.

[8c] How do I program mods for Quake2?

Quake2 uses dynamic link libraries for programming. In your /baseq2 directory you'll find a 'gamex86.dll' file (gamex86.so in Linux. "so" is the extension given to Linux dlls). That's the standard Q2 dll that Q2 always uses. If you start Q2 with a mod directory appended to the command line (eg: "+set game eraser", for instance) then Q2 will read in the dll from that particular directory and use its modified code along with the standard dll's code.

Probably the first thing you'll need to do before anything else is download the 3.20 source code...

Linux
Win32

...and then see if it builds without any errors. After you've gotten it to build properly check out some of the following sites for info and tutorials to get your feet wet.

The Quake2 links focus primarily on DLL programming in C. QuakeC is the hacked version of C that original Quake uses for programming.

[9] Performance Questions

[9a] How can I improve my OpenGL performance?

You will find all you need to know about Q2 and OpenGL on The 3 Fingers' Quake 2 Tweak Guide.

More info is at Flying Penguin's site:

[9b] My ping doubled when I upgraded to Q2 3.15+!

Q2 3.15+ reports the correct ping times. All versions before this were reporting ping incorrectly. This apparent increase in ping should have no effect on game play.

[9d] What's the best video card/CPU for Q2?

Tom's Hardware is a good reference site to see what types of hardware will get you the best performance from Q2.

http://www.tomshardware.com/

AnandTech is an excellent hardware review site:

http://www.anandtech.com/

A lot of folks use some variety of 3Dfx Voodoo II/III. Excellent framerates, decent video quality, 3D only, 3Dfx's proprietary GL.

http://www.3dfx.com/

The Nvidia Riva TNT/TNT2 is a good 2D/3D board. Excellent framerates, excellent video quality, full OpenGL implementation.

http://www.nvidia.com/

The newer ATI 128 Rage boards also yield outstanding performance in both 2D and 3D modes. Also has a full implementation of OpenGL to allow you better graphics and framerates in GL games (Q2).

http://www.atitech.com/

CPUs? Well, Intel's P2 and P3 are obviously going to give good performance. The newer 128k Celerons are excellent choices for many since they generally have the performance of P2s and early P3s yet cost about half as much. AMD's latest offerings are also extremely good buys. They seem to be steadily catching up to and frequently surpassing Intel's performance, so don't ignore them. This subject is so extensive that it really can't be treated fairly in this FAQ. Your best bet is to check out many of the gaming and hardware review sites in order to draw your own conclusions.

[9e] How can I tell how many FPS I am getting?

There are two ways, the best is to type the following into the console:

disconnect
timedemo 1
map demo1.dm2

When it is done it will report your frame rate. To get out of timedemo mode type the following into the console:

timedemo 0

To really stress your system, check 3Fingers' demos crusher and massive1:

http://www.voodooextreme.com/3Fingers/massive1.zip - 639 KB
http://www.ve3d.net/3Fingers/files/crusher.zip - 368 KB

You can also get a quick, yet inaccurate, estimate of your fps by typing the following into the console:

timerefresh

This command will on spin the player around, so it is more a test of the current section of map then a test of the general video performance. It can be useful if you are making a map and want to test different areas of the map.

[9f] How can I tell how good of a connection I have?

You can get a graphical representation of your connection by entering the command:

netgraph 1

Into your console. This will display a bar graph across the bottom of your screen The bars of different colors represent different things as listed below. {>>>Nehalem}

Green Bar: Packet successfully sent/received to/from server. The higher this bar is the longer it took. The higher your PING.

Red Bar: Packet lost.

Yellow Bar: The information was never brought into the game (i.e., it was received, but dropped by your computer) because your RATE setting is too low. A lot of these means you should increase your rate setting.

Blue Bar: This is very bad, and has to do with bad delta compression offsets (I have no idea what that means). Too many of these means you need a new ISP.

To turn the netgraph off, type into your console:

netgraph 0

You can create an alias to quickly display this information with the push of a button. For example:

alias "net1" "netgraph 1; echo NetGraph ON...; wait; bind F7 net2"
alias "net2" "netgraph 0; echo NetGraph OFF..; wait; bind F7 net1"
bind F7 "net1"

Where can get a serial number or crack for GameSpy?
Where can I download a ZBot, a RatBot, or some other cheat?

[10b] How can I cheat in MP Q2?

First, you have to issue the "unbindall" command into the console while in the middle of a Q2 MP DM game. Then press ALT+F4. Then press ALT+DEL+CTRL. (While you're at it, at the DOS prompt do a "format /u c:" and answer YES.)

In other words, don't cheat, and especially, don't come to this newsgroup asking about it. AGQ2 is very hostile toward such questions. We all honor the rules of fairplay and sportsmanship for the sake of the challenge and the fun of the game itself.

If you want to cheat in single player Q2 see question [4e].

[10c] Which is better? Quake2 or Unreal? Quake3 or Unreal Tournament?

Most of the regulars here obviously would say Quake. Most of the regulars of news:alt.games.unreal equally as obviously would say Unreal. Comparing apples to oranges is an exercise in pointless philosophy, however, many trolls and their respondents seem to employ this sort of circle-jerk sophistry as a way to pathetically gain some sort of much-needed personal validation.
