A year from now, the world will be watching as we enter the new
millennium. By now you've probably heard about the year 2000
problem, known as Y2K, which may occur if date-sensitive devices
can't read the year 2000 and assume it to be 1900.
At Nicor Gas, we're confident that we'll have our systems
corrected and tested in plenty of time for the year 2000. We
began working on this issue in 1996 and are continuing our testing
process to correct any affected systems.
We want you to know that our number one priority is maintaining
safe and dependable service. We're especially focusing on issues
that may have an impact on our gas supply. We're very aware
that the year 2000 issue occurs in the middle of winter, and
that you depend on our gas delivery to heat your home and keep
your business operating. That's why we're taking the necessary
actions to ensure you'll have uninterrupted service.
Part of our focus is on embedded chips, which are found in
the controls of our storage and transmission facilities, our
building security systems and HVAC (heating, ventilating, air
conditioning) systems. Most of these devices, however, do not
actually have any date-related functions. We estimate that about
90 percent of the items identified will not need to be replaced
in order to work properly in the year 2000 and beyond.
Nicor Gas is committed to being prepared for the new millennium.
