What is Post-Polio Syndrome?Post-Polio Syndrome (PPS) is a condition that can strike polio survivors anywhere from 10 to 40 years after their recovery from polio. PPS is caused by the death of individual nerve terminals in the motor units that remain after the initial polio attack. Symptoms include fatigue, slowly progressive muscle weakness, muscle and joint pain, and muscular atrophy. The severity of PPS depends upon how seriously the survivors were affected by the first polio attack. Doctors estimate the incidence of PPS at about 25 percent of the survivor population. The only way to be sure a person has PPS is through a neurological examination aided by other laboratory studies (for example, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), neuroimaging, electrophysiological studies, and muscle biopsies or spinal fluid analysis).  6/20/01

Medical mumbo jumboThere are quite a few funny things going on with medical care and the cost of prescriptions. The FDA has discovered through surveys that patients will walk into a doctor’s office and request medicines they’ve seen on TV without even finding out what’s wrong with them. In the past, the doctor would evaluate the patient and choose a medication based on what the symptoms. But today, 70% of the time the doctor writes the prescription that the patient wants. This is not healthy and not smart. Another trend going on involve doctors being influenced by pharmaceutical companies. The company reps give doctors freebies and take them out to nice dinners to try and get them to use their products. The doctors then push those products on you, when the generic version is available for much cheaper. So, remember that when a doctor tries to push some brand name medication on you. Thirdly, you may have heard about Eckerd’s drug stores using your personal information to push certain products to you over the phone. Basically, this means that Eckerd’s gets a cut of by convincing you to buy a product. Furthermore, these “agreements” between drug companies and pharmacies prohibit the pharmacies from telling you about a medication that may be better for you. So, there are some untoward things going on in the pharmaceutical industry. Remember that most generic prescriptions contain the same ingredients and will work just as well>  6/01/02

The Polio Information Center Online (PICO) provides information about poliovirus, the causative agent of paralytic poliomyelitis and also an important model system for studying viruses in the family Picornaviridae. This family contains viruses which cause such conditions as the common cold, encephalitis, aseptic meningitis, and hepatitis, to name a few. Thus, while the Salk and Sabin vaccines have significantly reduced the threat of paralysis by polio, there are still good reasons to study this virus.   6/1/02

We have now released Selida 2.0, and we are very curious on how you users like it! We think it is the best HTML editor on the net. But, of course, we have made it, so it fits us perfectly. Our beta testers have been overjoyed over the new version's possibilities and flexibility. Selida 2 offers a whole new user interface and we have redesigned all the tools and wizard. The new version is both faster and easier to use. We think this version is the final breakthrough for our beloved editor. The release of Selida 2 is of course the main event, but another small thing is that we have added a possibility to support us, without having to spend any money  6/1/02

To create, as a community, the leading international office suite that will run on all major platforms and provide access to all functionality and data through open-component based APIs and an XML-based file format.
OpenOffice.org is both an Open Source product and a project. The product is a multi-platform office productivity suite. It includes the key desktop applications, such as a word processor, spreadsheet, presentation manager, and drawing program, with a user interface and feature set similar to other office suites’. Sophisticated and flexible, OpenOffice.org also works transparently with a variety of file formats, including those of Microsoft Office.
Localizations of OpenOffice.org are available in 27 languages with more being constantly added by the community. OpenOffice.org runs stably and natively on Solaris, Linux (including PPC Linux), and Windows. Additional ports, such as for FreeBSD, IRIX, and Mac OS X, are in various stages of completion.
Written in C++ and with documented APIs licensed under the LGPL and SISSL Open Source licenses, OpenOffice.org allows any knowledgeable developer to benefit from the source. And, because the file format for OpenOffice.org is XML, interoperability is easy, making future development and adoption more certain.

Post-Polio Network Z A When I discovered I had Post-Polio Syndrome in 1997 I formed the Post-Polio Network Z A (formerly The South African Post-Polio Syndrome Association) in order to make available all information to those of you who went through what I did and what we are all still going through: The painful indignity suffered over the years of being considered a hypochondriac because of the symptoms we were and are going through and the lack of knowledge and resources available to us.  9/1/01

The Environmental Aspects Of The Post Polio Syndrome The environmental aspects of health and disease are becoming much more clearly defined. The adverse influences of environmental incitants on wounded target organs have often been seen by people working in the area of environmental medicine. Because of these observations a preliminary survey of environmental influences on post polio patients who exhibited the post polio syndrome was done.  9/1/01

Hi, I'm Steve Smy, nicknamed "The Silver Tongue" by some very dear friends. This site is still being developed so please bear with me until I manage to create something worthwhile.
I was born in Ipswich (in the UK) on the 30th of June, 1957. In 1961, I contracted Poliomyelitis, which was then better known as "Infantile Paralysis", a misnomer in several respects. When I was released from hospital quarantine, it seemed that I had escaped without any consequences.   1/15/01

Hi everybody; There's a new Post-Polio list just starting up.It's all about the medical aspects of post polio syndrome. As more of us get on, it will become a great place to get answers to our medical questions. The part that excites me the most about this new list, is that our questions, and answers to them, are all being archived. The archives don't have much in them yet (because it's so new), but they're growing. They are real easy to use, you just type in your search word. So, if you want to know the xiphoid from xylocaine, and that from a xylophone, this would be a good place to look. You'll probably want to bookmark the archives, they're at:http://maelstrom.stjohns.edu/archives/post-polio.html
And here's the "official poop" about the e-mail list:Post-Polio-Med is a forum for questions and answers to and from post-polio syndrome researchers, physicians and other post-polio syndrome medical professionals, polio Survivors, family, friends, students and others who are interested in post-polio syndrome.
This includes, but is not limited to: questions, answers and information about post-polio syndrome research, clinical issues, clinical trials and current treatment practices.
For more info on Post-Polio-Med, go to the Post-Polio-Med Web Page:

What's up with your doc? Before you choose a physician, check the Web to evaluate the record By Lauren Wiley June 18 - June 24, 2000
When a doctor walks into the examination room, the first thing he or she does is glance at your medical history chart. But what if you had a chart on your doctor?
Checking on professional credentials is another way the Web is altering the social terrain. While your physician may chafe at the idea, it's now possible to know as much about doctors as they know about you.
"It's absolutely the consumers' right to know," says Sarah Loughran, senior vice president of HealthGrades.com, which provides access to doctors' professional histories. Consumers can view doctors' educational backgrounds, disciplinary records and the site's rating for the hospitals where they practice. However, mentions of disciplinary sanctions on the site lack necessary detail.   6/19/00

Welcome to the Federal Communications Commission's Disabilities Issues Task Force Home Page on the World Wide Web. As Chairman of the Federal Communications Commission and of the Disabilities Issues Task Force, I am committed to ensuring that the telecommunications revolution does not become segregated, between "halves" and "have nots". People with disabilities must have equal access to the information age; the Federal Communications Commission has an obligation to ensure that telecommunications are accessible and usable to the 54 million Americans with disabilities. Equal telecommunications access, by breaking down barriers and accelerating progress towards full participation, is critical to our nation's success. The curb cut to the twenty-first century is technology and every American should have equal access to this tool.

I have appointed Meryl Icove to be the Director of the Disabilities Issues Task Force. I encourage you to contact her if you have any concerns, questions, suggestions or ideas on how I can advance the opportunities for Americans with disabilities. 1/31/99

Elber's Place I had polio when I was 13 months old. I bring it up for one reason. There are a tremendous number of Web sites on the Internet dedicated to helping people. The amount of information some of them contain is amazing.
You can find historical information, updates on the latest medical research, definitions, case studies, and personal testimonials.
Perhaps most important, if you are looking for answers, you'll discover you are not alone, and that there are people out there willing to listen and to help.
There are support groups and chat channels on any subject you can imagine - polio, AIDS, cancer, muscular dystrophy, alcoholism, drug abuse, depression - the topics are endless. Help is out there if you want it.
