UC Academic Team Takes Second Place at Quiz Bowl By Annie Yang Contributing Writer "Montezerdi, a 17th century Italian opera composer," was a pivotal answer for a UC Berkeley academic team, which took second place at an annual Quiz Bowl tournament this weekend. The Quiz Bowl academic competition tests students' knowledge on various topics, including world history, literature and the sciences. UC Berkeley's strong showing pushed them one step closer to competing at the national tournament in April. After much deliberation, four UC Berkeley team members answered the bonus question about music correctly, winning a round against Stanford University at the quiz bowl. At the tournament, hosted by UC Berkeley, 60 students on 15 teams from colleges nationwide faced each other in a battle of the minds. The UC Berkeley team came in second place, beating Stanford, UCLA and UC Davis. Other participants included Brigham Young University, which won first place. For the first time in three years, the Quiz Bowl team decided to send only undergraduates to compete. Graduate students organized and ran the tournament, after forming the Berkeley Foundation for Academic Competition Tournaments (FACT) this fall. "This made our accomplishments that much stronger," said Jeff Newman, Quiz Bowl club member and tournament statistician. "The graduate students have played for years and years, and to have our undergraduate students play other teams which have graduate students on their teams, and play them closely, is quite an accomplishment," Newman added. Members of the second-place team were junior molecular cell biology major Ben Craycroft, sophomore math major Haggai Elitzur, junior history major Philip Huang and sophomore Katy Suttorp.
