Some Facts about TOEFL

Tips about taking the TOEFL examination

The purpose of TOEFL is to evaluate the English proficiency of people whose native language is not English and is appropriately it is tilled Test of English as Foreign Language. The test is based on multiple choice questions that have four answers and one of them is right. Since there are many regional variation of English around the world, it may be worrying you that which variation will the test use. According to ETS(Educational Testing Service) they will only test your ability to understand North American English - not British English, not Indian English.

The test comprises of three sections. They are

1. Listening Comprehension. In this section an audio tape will be played in the room. Initially there will be instructions which will help you understand the format of the test. Though it is suggested that you familiarize yourself with the format before hand by reading this web site thoroughly and practicing Baron's TOEFL tests. The book contains three audio tapes which have listening comprehension sections of the test. There are, I think, eight tests, which provide you with ample opportunity to practice for the test, because, I think that TOEFL is basically an easy test. A week of practicing should suffice.

The instructions on the audio tape should also help you get oriented to the accent. Though, again this should have been done earlier using the Barron's audio tapes. But anyway, these instructions help you to re-orient on the day of the test.

2. Structure and Written Expression. Those section measures your ability to recognize language structure that is appropriate for standard written english.

3. Reading Comprehension. This section measures your ability to understand non technical reading matter. If you have given GRE, which most people who are appearing for TOEFL have, then these Reading Comprehension will seem very easy to you. I finished them in 3/4 of the time allocated.
