Recommended Readings

Banks, Jack., Monopoly Television: MTV's Quest to Control the Music. Boulder, Colorado: Westview Press 1996.

This is a fantastic book that illustrates the history of MTV, plus explains how MTV censored numerous music videos.

Denisoff, R. Serge. Inside MTV. New Brunswick, New Jersey: Transaction Publishers 1988.

If you want more information about MTV, read this great book by Serge Denisoff. This book talks about the inner-workings of the station and gives little info on the history of the station.

Gore, Mary Elizabeth (Tipper). Raising PG Kids In An X-Rated Society. Nashville: Abingdon Press 1987.

This book comes from the mouth of Tipper Gore, the head of the PMRC during its rise in the late 80s - early 90s. She gives thorough explanations of how we should raise our kids, including a great chapter on her take on music censorship.

Heins, Marjorie. Not In Front of the Children. New York: Hill and Wang 2001.

If you want to learn about the laws of censorship by alternative, hipper means, then read this book. The book mostly contains information ontelevision and movie censorship, but its section on music is well detailed and well explained.

Inglis, Ian. The Beatles, Popular Music and Society. New York: St. Martin's Press 2000.

Understanding the history of the Beatles has never been easier! This book gives great information about censorship in the Beatles, along with their deep dark secrets.

Szatmary, David. A Time to Rock: A social history of Rock n' Roll. Upper Saddle River, N.J.: Prentice Hall 1996.

This is a perfect book that illustrates the history of Rock and Roll. It is the best book I've use, because it is not biased and it gives fair arguments for both for and against censorship.
