DPWR is Back!

Yay, we're back! And better than that, we're home! Tell your friends, tell your forum buddies. I'll be passing through the other forums after work making the official announcements, unless someone else beats me to it, but until then, word of mouth is your friend smile.gif.

Things should be falling into place over the next day or so as I finalize everything and tweak the little bugs that may have sprung up in the transfer. There's a couple more layout fixes to do, and I still have a few things up my sleeve for the future, but for the moment, everything (with the exception of the Gallery) is working, to the best of my knowledge. If you break something, please PM or email me, and PLEASE tell me how you did it! Knowing what happened beforehand will help pinpoint where things went wrong.

Thanks for bearing with me, gang, and thanks yet again to the great folks from Uru Obsession who let us visit for a while smile.gif.

Dan Irish Named Best Producer of 2002
Posted By: Alahmnat @ On: Mar 23 2003, 03:53 AM
In: Myst III: Exile News
The Game Audio Network Guild (G.A.N.G.) has selected Dan Irish as best producer of 2002 for his work on Myst III: Exile (he was primarilly responsible for getting the orchestrated music into the game, a departure from the all-synthesizer approach of Myst and Riven), as well as his continued devotion to musical quality in games.

Dan's working at Sierra now as executive producer of Homeworld 2 (one smash title to another, man's got skillz wink.gif), and he had this comment to make when queried about the award by the people at Relicnews:

QUOTE
Just to clarify it was mostly for my work on Myst III: Exile, the soundtrack that won several awards and has sold over 100,000 units.

However, the award goes to the non-audio person who cared the most about Audio and in Homeworld2's case, I'm putting my expertise to work in helping produce a Homeworld2 soundtrack with live musician recording, like I did for Myst III: Exile.

So that part was considered as well, that I'm continuing to support excellence in game music despite working on a new product.

Big hats-off to Dan on his award smile.gif.

Upgrades coming sooner than hoped
Posted By: Alahmnat @ On: Mar 10 2003, 05:05 PM
In: Community News
Due to some... issues that have been discovered with Invision Power Board (aka IPB or IBF), I will be needing to upgrade the software sooner than I had anticipated. Because of this, some things I had hoped to include will have to be put off, and the upgrade may be slightly bumpier than I had expected. I will do everything I can to get the site prepped and ready for the upgrade by the end of the day today. If such a thing proves to be an impossibility, I may resort to closing the site until I can get the software upgraded, rather than risk putting this site's database and possibly the rest of the server at risk.

Please do not ask me to elaborate on the nature of the issues that will have to be addressed in this upgrade, as I don't have all the specifics, nor would I wish to divulge them publically.

Thank you for your patience and understanding. Hopefully I'll be able to get this resolved by the end of the day, and everything will be back to some semblance of nornal.

State of the Website 2/24/03
Posted By: Alahmnat @ On: Feb 25 2003, 12:03 AM
In: Community News
Every now and then I like to let the people who visit this site know how things are going behind the scenes, and what can be expected for the future. This would be one of those times, so here we go.

  • There is currently an upgrade being written and developed to bring DPWR.NET up to the newest version of Invision Power Board, 1.1.1. The release of 1.1.1 has put the release of the updated website back a bit, as it was being updated to 1.1 FINAL (we're running BETA 4), and as such, some of the things I had written and edited have to be re-coded because of the file updates. Some of the items of note for this update are as follows:
    • The update currently being wdeveloped will cause some minor address changes for the forums (again). The boards will be moving back to http://www.dpwr.net/forums after the update. Don't worry, though, the link you're using will direct you to the website main page, from which you'll be able to re-access the forums and bookmark them correctly. I tried very hard to avoid this happening, but it didn't work out, so we're stuck with having to move things around again to get a better system in place.
    • The forum database WILL NOT BE AFFECTED by the update. All member accounts and posts will be preserved after the update is completed, so there will be no need to re-register, or fear losing any topics from the Lounge or the Archive.
    • In addition to the forum address change, there will be a slightly new skin implemented. Nothing huge in terms of changes... mostly minor tweaks to make the site more unique and distinguished. I am also VERY pleased to announce that the new site will be 100% 800x600 resolution compatible, as there are apparently a good number of people who use this resolution, and I have no intention to short-change them when it comes to viewing the site. Put simply, this site is downright ugly at 800x600, and this will not be the case after the update is made. Again, because of the 1.1.1 release, the skin will be a little longer in coming than originally intended, but it, along with the rest of the revised site, will be out soon.

  • The Dictionary Forum will be closed when the site is updated, while I try to figure out the best way to implement the Dictionary in an easy-to-use, easy-to-browse, easy-to-update way. It might use the forums as a base, and it also may not, and I could just end up programming something seperate to do the job. Whatever happens, however, the Dictionary will not be a stalling point in the development of the next DPWR update. The update will be out as soon as it's ready, Dictionary or not. I've made this decision because of the readability improvements to the site at lower screen resolutions, as well as a couple of security reasons, which the update will provide for the site.
  • I am going to be starting back to school, as well as picking up a second job, within the next couple of weeks. As such, my ability to keep a close eye on the forums and website, as well as my ability to update and develop new content for the website, will be diminished. If anyone would like to volunteer to help if necessary, please either e-mail or PM me informing me of this, and I would be happy to have you on board as a team member.
  • There will be a small amount of Archive maintenance performed at soome time in the future, probably after I get the new updates finished and uploaded. During this time, I will be consolidating information from replies to Archive articles into the first post and removing any replies, as well as deleting any replies which are unnecessary or extraneous. All credit will be kept, so if you mentioned something else about a subject in an article, your name will still appear, with a link to your profile, in the original post beside the information you supplied. I know that was really badly worded, so if you're really curious about what I mean by that, drop me a PM and I'll explain it to you in full. This maintenance is being performed to ensure that the Archive is as proessional-looking as possible and contains straightforward, easy-to-read articles. It's an encyclopedia, after all (though sometimes I get the feeling "Almanac" might be more fitting), not a yearbook.

I do hope that with the new updates, people find the website to be easier to read, easier to use, and generally more appealing. This is the year that Uru is being released, and I want to make this place as ready as possible for the massive influx of information and members that will ineviteably follow the game's release. As always, if you have a suggestion, a question, or any other form of feedback, be sure to start a topic in the Feedback and Support Forum.

Here's to a great 2003 at DPWR.

New Poll at Ubisoft's Uru Forums
Posted By: Alahmnat @ On: Jan 18 2003, 01:30 PM
In: UbiSoft News
In an effort to get some sort of cohesive, public expression of the Mac following for the Myst series out to UbiSoft, in the hopes that it will sway them into making a Mac port of Uru, a new poll has been started asking if you would buy the game, and if so for what operating system you would prefer to buy it.

Mac users who have an interest in purchasing Uru, please vote! But only vote if you intend to buy it, as false votes will create a false level of interest and hurt the chances for future Myst games being released on Mac when UbiSoft gets less of a return than they expected.

Beta Testing has Started
Posted By: Alahmnat @ On: Jan 18 2003, 04:55 AM
In: Uru News
According to this topic at the DRC forums (registration required), the closed beta test for Uru has begun. Beta testers are prohibited from stating their participation in the test because of the Non-Disclosure Agreement attached to their participation, however, so don't expect any juicy tidbits or revelations from anybody, and don't bother asking anyone if they're in, because they won't be able to tell you.

For those without a DRC forum account, here's the post in question...

QUOTE (D'gr @ DRC Forums)
Beta testers sign an NDA preventing them from revealing that they are beta testers. But you are correct, the beta test has begun.

Slashdot Comments on Uru
Posted By: Alahmnat @ On: Jan 9 2003, 01:56 PM
In: Uru News
Well, for the first time in the entirity of my days in this community, Slashdot has generated a non-flaming discussion about a Myst-related product. The article itself contains very little (if anything) that the press release hasn't already revealed, but the discussion that follows is interesting, and amazingly positive (which is rare, considering slashdot's apparent undying hatred of the original games).

The article itself can be found here

Press Release: Beta testing and more!

This... is... freaking awesome!

QUOTE
SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 8, 2003--Ubi Soft Entertainment, one of the world's largest videogame publishers, and Cyan Worlds, Inc., developers of the legendary Myst® and Riven™, today announced their highly anticipated upcoming online adventure Uru™: Online Ages Beyond MYST. Players will have the opportunity to explore and interact with meticulously crafted environments in, around, and beyond the newly discovered underground D'ni empire that predates human civilization. Explorers wishing to help test the game during its beta phase are invited to apply today by visiting http://uru.ubi.com.

"Uru is an ancient word, the earliest word for city. It is rooted in the idea of a gathering of people, which is precisely what Uru will foster," said Rand Miller, founder of Cyan Worlds. "We've been working for almost five years developing the cutting edge technology, detailed design and breathtaking graphics that allow us to build real-time online worlds that go beyond Myst. Imagine being able to explore lush landscapes, ancient deserted cities, mysterious forests, curious swamps -- and that's only the beginning. We're trying to provide an environment that's so engrossing, people will talk about it and share their experience. With Uru the journey is experienced together within the game, with friends, family, even strangers uncovering fantastic places together."

Uru will take advantage of broadband to deliver a continually updated, immersive environment and storyline, with content that grows, changes and evolves constantly. It will also be the first persistent world to support real-time voice communication. Uru is designed to appeal to a broad audience and enable players of all skill levels and interests to experience expansive ages of the Myst universe in a uniquely social environment. Playing their own avatars, hundreds of thousands of players will meet new people, all realistic impersonations of themselves, play games, solve mysteries and embark on a voyage of discovery with friends. Players will be able to customize their level of interaction with other players, choosing to play alone, with small groups of friends or in areas where they can meet new people.

With 12 million units sold worldwide, Myst is one of the most widely recognized and critically acclaimed game brands in history. "Uru represents an incredible evolution in the Myst product line and in online entertainment," said Jason Rubinstein, General Manager of ubi.com. "Fans of the Myst series, online socializers, mystery buffs, Internet chatters, multiplayer online gamers and non-gamers alike will be amazed by Uru. It will definitely raise the bar for an immersive online experience, and we expect it to attract new customers to online gaming and perhaps change the face of mainstream entertainment."

PC users will be able to enjoy Uru, which will be made available through ubi.com, one of the top ten gaming portals. The final version of the game is scheduled to launch in late 2003 with a closed beta test commencing in January 2003.
