Beaux Arts Bash - The charity silent auction for Scottsdale Artists School will be taking place again to raise funds for the schools continued programs included such artists as Joe Anna Arnett, Veryl Goodnight, Raymond Kinstler and Burt Silverman. I am happy to participate again in such a worthy cause.

Latest Read - Germain Greer's- The Obstacle Race - (The fortunes of Women Painters and their work). With chapter like: The Illusion of Success, Disappearing Success. This Book is another one of Greer's mind bending efforts. As a woman artist myself I have had a life changing experience by reading this book. One can not help but comprehend the thoroughness of the research and sharpe historical observations of the course of women artists throughout history. I have nothing but admiration for all of these women who prior to reading this I had absolutely no idea existed. The book runs the gamet of history in women's art from the Cloisters to the 19th century... One only hopes that this generation will have something to say for itself in its artwork with substance and enduring principles as its guide. About the Author
Germaine Greer is the author of The Female Eunuch, The Change and most recently The Whole Woman, all worldwide bestsellers. She is a renowned academic and cultural commentator.
Recently I read a fabulous book and looked at fabulous painting from the show "A Studio of Her Own" by Erica Hirshler. I am so pleased that these and other competent women artists are finally getting their due and some biographical materials are becoming available to fill in the woefully sparse history books of women artist. We see that women too have had every bit as much talent and ability to offer in the past as well as the present. The history of women artists has been far too long neglected. A smart collector in today's market would be avidly collecting the works of contemporary women artists since undoubtedly the museums are waking up to the fact that their collections and bibliographies are woefully inadequate in this realm. I highly recommend as a MUST READ the book I'm reading on Mary Cassatt titled simply Mary Cassatt: A Life. by Nancy Mowll Mathews. The book is a fascinating not only as a biography of the life of Mary Cassatt but of the art circles of her time, family life and historical context of the times both in the States and in France. From my perspective I am so happy that I happened on this book because it puts alot of bits and pieces together both on my own career and those of the artists of that time and the information which had previously been sketchy from one artist to another are all interrelated. Also I'm recommending another book... related to the Mary Cassatt saga... This one is on the collection and collectors the Havermeyers.... Titled " Impressionism comes to America. Just about 1/2 way through and it is equally fascinating but from the point of view of the dealers and collectors. It is interesting to me as well that the auction prices for some of these piece is listed. Of course don't forget that the dollar was a little stronger back in the late 1800's at one point I figured out from the WSJ reference on the history of the DOW that the dollar was worth about 10 times what it is now. So a $2000 painting would be equivalent to a $20,000 price today.
I'd recommend ordering an exhibition catalogue on the Women of the Academie Julian which has just finished at the Dahesh Museum in NYC. Catalogue is $35+$4 shipping and can be obtained via fax or mail from the Dahesh museum also offered on Amazon.
