After the success of her auspicious self-titled debut disc, Brandy occupied herself with a series of high-profile compilations and lauded soundtrack appearances beginning with the Q's Jook Joint LP and an illustrious inclusion in Atlantic Records: 50 Years - Golden Anniversary Collection disc.

At the request of renowned music maestro Quincy Jones, Brandy certified her involvement in the 40-year retrospective renewal of his blues material. A cover of the Michael Jackson classic - "ROCK WITH YOU", and an ensemble performance of 1979's "STUFF LIKE THAT," where Brandy duets with Soul queen Chaka Kahn in the company of such greats as Charlie Wilson, Ray Charles, Ashford & Simpson, and Kirk Whalum, featured the then 16-year old songstress jamming with legendary soul pioneers. The Grammy winning Q's Jook Joint compilation is RIAA certified platinum for U. S. sales over 1 million copies.

Next, a resilient Lenny Kravitz collaboration on "WHERE ARE YOU NOW?" for Batman Forever, the multi-platinum motion picture soundtrack proved to be a most noteworthy artistic pairing. In the same year, another Chaka Kahn teaming (this time including Gladys Knight and Tamia) spawned the Grammy nominated Top 10 R&B staple "MISSIN' YOU" from the multi-platinum soundtrack to the film Set It Off. "MISSIN' YOU" received a Grammy nomination in the Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals category.
In 1994, former A&R executive Darryl Williams signed Brandy to Atlantic Records, and her debut album, BRANDY, released on September 27, 1994 spawned the runaway success of such singles as "I WANNA BE DOWN", "BABY", "BEST FRIEND", and "BROKENHEARTED." The album presented Brandy in a versatile setting of rhythmic hip-hop grooves, soulful ballads, gospel-tinged dedications, and up-tempo dance tracks. By 1995, BRANDY was RIAA certified 4x platinum.

The first in a string of six consecutive Top 10 singles was "I Wanna Be Down." This song quickly became an anthem and pioneered one of the first all female all-star remixes with Queen Latifah, YoYo, & MC Lyte. "BABY" soon followed - jumping #118 to #1 with SoundScan singles, #17 to #1 on Billboard Hot R&B Singles, and #60 to #5 on the Billboard Hot 100. The success of these two singles made Brandy the youngest artist in history ever to have two consecutive #1's.
