About the network

freenode exists to provide an interactive environment for coordination and support of peer-directed projects, including those relating to free software and open source. Our network is currently implemented using Internet Relay Chat (IRC). Our aim is to help improve the communicative and collaborative skills of our participants and to maintain a friendly, efficient environment for project coordination and technical support.

In 1998, the network had about 200 users and less than 20 channels. We currently peak at over 10,000 users and over 3,000 channels. It's hard to maintain a friendly IRC environment, and we put a lot of effort into it. It requires social hacks and software hacks. We continue to grow and we'll keep working to ensure that the network remains a productive and a useful place.

freenode is a service of Peer-Directed Projects Center, an IRS 501(c)(3) tax-exempt corporation. Contributions to PDPC help provide resources to keep us running.

If you're interested in looking around the network, please find a server and come see us, or have a look at our network policies and project news and philosophy. Welcome to freenode!
