The focus of this unit is on the role played by Hitler in the evolving and stabilising Nazi State. Students will be judging the development path taken by Hitler in formulating his own and party power base and the implications for future policy and state. Close examination of the systems and methods of public coercion will be taken alongside an inspection of the roles taken by Himmler, Goering and Goebbels in the organisation of the new Nazi state. Additionally, students will study and assess the extent to which Hitler was an effective leader and dictator or a weak despot who required the help of others to secure and legitimise his power.
