Freedom from Invisible - No Pigface Tour (02-21-2003 until 12-31-2003)
Just to let you know - I won't be on the upcoming Pigface tour. After 6 years of being signed to Martin Atkins and Invisible, I am finally free. These past few years have been nearly impossible and I have on many occasions been ready to throw in the towel. Thanks to those of you who have stuck by and been patient for all these years!
I recorded "Piece and Love" in my bedroom at my own expense. Martin mixed and edited it - but hardballed me into giving him credit as co-songwriter and producer. (He threatened to shelve the album if I
didn't.) In addition he charged to my tab $25,000 for his studio services. As I was signed to his label and couldn't afford a lawyer, I hadn't much choice.
Things got worse. Atkins wouldn't give me to record the new album, yet wouldn't release me to work on other projects unless they were somehow tied to him. As I had signed an exclusive deal to him, this made it difficult to even make a living. In 5 years of being signed, I had received no accounting statements or payments. Never mind not having a studio or recording equipment, I didn't even have a home! Somehow I was supposed to miraculously produce a new album from thin air. Thanks for all of you who helped me with a couch, floorspace, spare room, etc. during this period.
I am in London on the new album. Like the first, it's being recorded on home equipment. I sold my original equipment when "Piece and Love" was released in order to tour the US and promote it. I had planned on replacing it after the tour but ended up depleting the funds just to survive. Since then, I have been slowly getting things together to the point where I now have the minimal needed to record an album. I should have it completed by summer and be touring again in the fall. It'll be released either on my own or a new label.
I will be starting a new section of this board devoted to music business horror stories. Over time I will be telling my story and my experiences. I only hope it will help others avoid the same nightmares.
