The Crown Prince is
the Heir Apparent to the Amir of the State of Kuwait. He is
also the Prime Minister of the country. According to the Constitution
of the State of Kuwait, "The Heir Apparent shall be designated
within one year at the latest from the date of the accession
of the Amir. His designation shall be affected by an Amiri
Order upon the nomination of the Amir and the approval of
the National Assembly, which shall be approved by a majority
vote of its members in a special sitting."
Kuwait's current Crown Prince
is HH Sheikh Saad Al-Abdallah Al-Sabah. Born in 1930, HH Sheikh
Saad is the eldest son of the late Sheikh Abdallah Al-Salem
Al-Sabah, former Amir of Kuwait. He was educated in Kuwait,
and later joined the Handen Police College in England, where
he attended specialised courses in police and security affairs
till 1954.
He held various posts in Kuwaiti police and
public security until 1959, when he was appointed Deputy
Director of Police and Public Security Department; he held
this position until 1961. On January 17, 1962, Sheikh Saad
Al-Abdallah Al-Sabah was appointed Minister of Interior
in the first Kuwaiti cabinet. In 1964, he was given additional
charge of Defence.
On January 31, 1978, the Amir appointed Sheikh
Saad as the Crown Prince of Kuwait. On February 8, 1978,
Sheikh Saad was appointed as Prime Minister. In this capacity,
HH Sheikh Saad has led the Kuwaiti cabinet for several years
in succession.
As the Crown Prince and Prime Minister, HH
Sheikh Saad Al-Abdallah also presides over the Supreme Defence
Council, the Supreme Petroleum Council, the Civil Service
Commission and the Higher Council of Housing.
