 Collector's Choice Awards

The Collector's Choice award list reflects selections made by International Book Collectors Association members. The awards differ from most reading lists in that selections are considered from a book collector's perspective. For example, we would exclude a modern-first edition with a printing of several million copies. The large printing means that there are too many copies to make it collectable. Look for first editions, limited editions, or special editions of the titles suggested below.

  • Austen, Jane. Pride and Prejudice.
  • Baldwin, James Go Tell It on the Mountain.
  • Balzac. Lost Illusions. Cousin Bette. Pére Goriot. Human Comedy. Perhaps Saintsbury's translations should be considered.
  • Baum, Frank. The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (1900).
  • Bellow, Saul. The Adventures of Augie March.
  • Brontë, Emily. Wuthering Heights.
  • Browne, Sir Thomas. Religio Medici and Urn Burial.
  • Buck, Pearl. The Good Earth.
  • Burroughs, Edgar Rice. Tarzan of the Apes.
  • Carol, Lewis. (Charles L. Dodgson). Alice in Wonderland. An edition with the original illustrations or a limited edition such as signed by Dali.
  • Cain, James M.. The Postman Always Rings Twice.
  • Caldwell, Erskine. God's Little Acre. Tobacco Road.
  • Capote, Truman. Breakfast at Tiffany's. In Cold Blood.
  • Cather, Willa. My Antonia
  • Cervantes. Don Quixote - the Doré illustrated editions are collectable.
  • Chandler, Raymond. Farewell, My Lovely.
  • Cheever, John. The Wapshot Chronicle.
  • Condon, Richard. The Manchurian Candidate.
  • Conrad, Joseph. Chance. Lord Jim. Victory. Youth. Almayer's Folly.
  • Crane, Stephen. The Red Badge of Courage.
  • Dante's Divine Comedy. Best edition may be the Temple Classics in three with the original Italian original and English translation on opposite pages. Also look for works illustrated by Doré.
  • de la Motte-Fouque, Freidrich H.K. Undine. The book illustrated by Arthur Rackham is nice.
  • de Maupassant, Guy. Le Maison Tellier. Madame Tellier's Establishment.
  • Dickens, Charles. Great Expectations. Oliver Twist.
  • Dos Passos, John. The 42nd Parallel.
  • Dostoievsky. Crime and Punishment. The Idiot. The Brothers Karamazof. The Insulted and Injured. The Poessessed. Translations by Constance Garnett and published by Macmillan.
  • Dreiser, Theodore The Titan. An American Tragedy. Sister Carrie.
  • Ellison, Ralph. Invisible Man.
  • Emerson Routledge's complete works of Emerson or any other complete edition in fine binding.
  • Euripedes. The Bacchanals. The Bacchae of Euripedes. Translations by Gilbert Murray may be of interest. Euripides was a favourite poet of John Milton and Goethe.
  • Faulkner, William. Absalom, Absalom!. As I Lay Dying. Light in August. Mosquitoes. The Reivers. Soldier's Pay. The Sound and the Fury.
  • Fitzgerald, F. Scott. The Beautiful and Damned. The Great Gatsby. Tales of the Jazz Age. This Side of Paradise. Tender is the Night.
  • France, Anatole. L'Orme de Mail. L'Abbe Jerome Coignard. Le Livre de mon Ami. Look for the French or authorized English translations.
  • Galsworth, John. The Country House. The Man of Property. Fraternity.
  • Goethe. Faust, translated by Bayard Taylor. Wilhelm Meister in Carlyle's translation.
  • Golding, William. Lord of the Flys.
  • Hardy, Thomas. Tess of the D'Urbevilles. The Return of the Native. The Mayor of Casterbridge. Far from the Madding Crowd. Wessex Poems.
  • Heine. Heine's Prose Works with the "Confessions".
  • Hemingway. For Whom the Bell Tolls. Old Man and the Sea. Sun Also Rises. Farewell to Arms.
  • Homer. The Odyssey. Look for the Butcher and Lang's translation. This book appeals to the adventurous soul.
  • Horace. The Odes of Horace. The early Latin and complete prose translation published by Macmillan.
  • Hugo, Victor The Toilers of the Sea. Les Miserables.
  • Ibsen. Look for editions containing the Wild Duck.
  • Ingalls, Laura. Little House on the Praire (1935). Little House in the Big Woods (1932).
  • James, Henry. Turn of the Screw. The Ambassadors. The Tragic Muse. The Soft Side. The Better Sort. The Wings of the Dove. The Golden Bowl.
  • Kipling, Rudyard. The Jungle Book. Puck of Pool's Hill.
  • Lamb, Charles The Essays of Elia.
  • Maugham, W. Somerset. Of Human Bondage.
  • Masters, Edgar Lee. Spoon River Anthology published by Macmillan.
  • Meredith, George. Harry Richmond.
  • Milton, John. Many editions to select from for Paradise Lost, Paradise Regained, and Samson Agonistes.
  • Nietzsche. Zarathustra. The Joyful Wisdom. Ecce Homo.
  • The Psalms of David. One of the post noble and dignified of all poetic literature.
  • Rabelais. Any English translation with the Doré illustrations are notable.
  • Scott, Sir Walter Guy Mannering. The Bride of Lammermoor. Heart of Midlothian. Ivanhoe. Lady of the Lake.
  • Sendak, Maurice. Where the Wild Things Are (1963). Children's.
  • Shakespeare. Many editions to select from. Temple and Limited Edition Club edition has value.
  • Shaw, George Bernard. Man and Superman.
  • Stendhal (Henri Beyle). The Red and the Black in the English edition or Le Rouge et le Noir in the French.
  • Sterne. Tristram Shandy.
  • Swift, Jonathan. Tale of a Tub. Gulliver's Travels.
  • Thackery. The History of Henry Esmond. Vanity Fair.
  • Turgeniev. Fathers and Sons. Virgin Soil. A Sportsman's Sketches. Translations by Constance Garnett.
  • Twain, Mark. Huckleberry Finn (1885).
  • Wilde, Oscar. Intentions. The Importance of Being Earnest. The Picture of Doran Gray.
  • White, E.B.. Charlotte's Web (1952). Children's.
  • Whitman, Walt. Leaves of Grass. Look for the LEC photographic edition that is quite valuable. A well known optimist and prophet of Democracy. A blend of mankind with nature.
  • Voltaire. Candide.
