Go Fly A
Kite
PENDERGAST
REGIONAL PARK is a wonderful place to fly some
kites this week with your children.
Pendergast Park is a fabulous large park,
maintained by the Bremerton Parks &
Recreation Department. It has several
outstanding soccer and softball areas, courts for
basketball and sand volleyball court your
children can play in. Nearby the huge
colorful playstructure is impressive and will
certainly fascinate your young ones. The
open grassy area is perfect for kite flying and
Frisbee throwing. Wear your grubby clothes
because theres even a small hill perfect
for rolling down! This is a great park
where the whole family can play together.
Before
You Go
Make your own kite. Find books at your
local library, look in your encyclopedia or check
the internet for ideas.
Check the
website http://www.KiteTrade.org/ (click
Kite Month) for very interesting kite
history. Wear layered clothes and
bring jackets according to the weather.
Bring your
kites, Frisbees, bikes, rollerblades and
baseball, volleyball, soccer or basketball
equipment. Bring water or snacks.
Bring
blankets or chairs and a camera.
On
The Way
Challenge
your children to name people that flew kites and
changed history. (Benjamin Franklin proved
electricity in lightning. A kite flown by
ten year-old Homan Walsh began construction of
the suspension bridge across the Niagara
River. Alexander Graham Bell created a
large kite using tetrahedral cells. The
Wright Bothers used kites to test their airplane
theories. Paul Garber created special kites
used in the military, target kites to increase
shooting accuracy and signal kites to pass
important information from ship to
aircraft.)
