Board of Directors

Bernard Daines

Chairman and CEO of Linux Networx

Mr. Daines has more than 30 years of experience in the networking industry and is widely recognized as an expert in Ethernet technology. In 1999, he formed two companies dedicated to utilizing the vast reach of the World Wide Web – World Wide Packets, which develops solutions to bring Gigabit Ethernet technology to the subscriber, and Webiness, which provides Digital Business Solutions to companies involved in Internet commerce. Mr. Daines also founded Packet Engines, a Gigabit Ethernet routing-switch manufacturer that was sold to Paris-based Alcatel in 1998. In 1992, Mr. Daines co-founded Grand Junction Networks, a Fast Ethernet switch manufacturer that was sold to Cisco Systems in 1995. In 1977, he founded Tidewater Associates, a firm specializing in hardware and software engineering consulting to Fortune 50 networking companies in California’s Bay Area. In the late sixties and throughout the seventies, Mr. Daines was employed at Hewlett-Packard and IBM. Mr. Daines has been instrumental in the development of the IEEE standards and innovative solutions for Fast Ethernet and Gigabit Ethernet. Mr. Daines earned a bachelor’s degree in computer science from Brigham Young University (BYU) and was instrumental in the development of the computer science department at BYU, lending his expertise in course instruction and curriculum formation.

Stephen Hill

President of Linux Networx

As president, Mr. Hill works closely with the Board of Directors to drive the overall direction of the company. Mr. Hill has more than 10 years of technology experience and a keen understanding of the role the Linux operating system is playing in today’s marketplace. Mr. Hill played an integral role in Caldera, Inc.’s antitrust lawsuit settlement with Microsoft Corp. Mr. Hill acted as one of the lead counsel, assembled the trial team, and served as the point of contact for negotiations in the settlement. Mr. Hill is a recognized expert in the high-tech field and has been interviewed by various international and national print and broadcast media. He received a bachelor’s degree (magna cum laude) in economics from BYU. Mr. Hill then earned his law degree (cum laude) from BYU, where he was an article editor of the Law Review. He was admitted to the Bar in Washington in 1977 and in Utah in 1981. Prior to joining Linux Networx, Mr. Hill worked for Snow, Christensen & Martineau where he practiced antitrust, securities, employment and business tort cases.

Kent Madsen

Managing Director for Wasatch Venture Fund

Prior to joining Wasatch Venture Fund, Mr. Madsen worked for Ford Motor Company in the Advanced Technology Group. While there, Mr. Madsen developed mathematical and computational models for analyzing vehicle aerodynamic and thermodynamic properties and systems. He then transferred to Ford's China Operations where he helped write, present and negotiate joint venture proposals. Mr. Madsen then relocated to China to manage the Product Development of a newly established joint venture in China. Prior to working for Ford, as a graduate student, Mr. Madsen taught courses in Engineering Thermodynamics and co-authored the Solutions Manual for Fundamental of Classic Thermodynamics, 5th edition, published by John Wiley & Sons. Mr. Madsen has a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering and applied mechanics with a minor in mathematics from the University of Pennsylvania. He also has a M.S.E. from the University of Michigan and a master’s degree in international studies, earned as a Lauder Fellow, from the Lauder Institute at the University of Pennsylvania. He holds a master’s in business administration from Wharton.

Darcy Mott

Vice President, Treasurer and CFO for Canopy Group

Mr. Mott uses his 25 years of experience in accounting and finance to manage the financial aspects of Canopy Group's portfolio. He enjoys the team approach that Canopy uses to blend technology innovation, financial flexibility, and legal structure to make each investment as successful as possible. Prior to joining Canopy, Mr. Mott served as vice president and treasurer for Novell, and prior to serving in that position, Mr. Mott served in various other financial management positions for Novell since September 1986. Mr. Mott worked for Arthur Andersen & Co., a global provider of professional services, from 1977 to 1986. Mr. Mott serves as a member of the board of directors of Caldera International, Inc., MTI Technology Corporation, and EBIZ Enterprises Incorporated. Mr. Mott also serves as a member of the board of directors of various privately held companies. Mr. Mott is a certified public accountant and holds a bachelor’s degree in accounting from BYU.

Joshua Harr, Ph.D.

Chief Technical Officer (CTO)

As CTO for Linux Networx, Mr. Harr has the responsibility of laying the technical roadmap for the company and is leading the team developing cluster management tools. Mr. Harr's experience with parallel processing, distributed computing, large server farms, and Linux clustering began when he built an eight-node cluster system out of used components while in college. An industry expert, Mr. Harr has been called upon to consult with businesses and lecture in college classrooms. He earned a Ph.D. in computational chemistry and a bachelor’s degree in molecular biology from BYU.

Dean Hutchings

Chief Operating Officer (COO)

Mr. Hutchings brings a wealth of knowledge and experience managing corporate finances and processes to the Linux Networx management team. As CFO, Mr. Hutchings is responsible for maintaining the financial well-being of Linux Networx, as well as overseeing many of the operational aspects of the company. As CFO of both private and public companies, Mr. Hutchings has obtained funding from capital markets, overseen investor relations, been responsible for the filing of SEC documents, and has managed multi-million dollar budgets. His experience prior to joining Linux Networx is extensive, including serving as CFO for EnvironMax, marketing controller at Novell, and CFO for Ion Laser Technology, Inc. A certified public accountant, Mr. Hutchings received his bachelor’s degree in business administration from California State University, Fullerton.

Michael Malan

Chief Financial Officer (CFO)

Mr. Malan brings over 21 years of financial management experience to his position as CFO for Linux Networx. As CFO, Mr. Malan is responsible for the financial well-being of the company. Prior to joining Linux Networx, he held financial positions in large and small public and private companies in the medical diagnostics, computer hardware, software documentation printing, and retail industries. He also has seven years of public accounting experience as manager of the small business department at Deloitte & Touche. In addition to a wealth of financial management expertise, Mr. Malan has experience with mergers, acquisitions, and divestitures in international business. He earned his master’s degree in business administration and bachelor’s degrees in finance and accounting from the University of Utah.

Kathy Chou

Vice President, Strategic Relations

Ms. Chou brings more than 13 years of experience in operations and management in the high-technology industry to her position as vice president of strategic relations for Linux Networx. As vice president of strategic relations, Ms. Chou manages all strategic partnerships for the company. Prior to joining Linux Networx, Ms. Chou held the position of vice president of operations for Penguin Computing, a San Francisco start-up. She also held positions including manufacturing manager at Agilent Technologies, corporate procurement manager at Hewlett-Packard, and marketing manager at Encore Products Operation. Ms. Chou earned a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering and master’s degree in Manufacturing Systems Engineering from Stanford University. She earned a master’s degree in business administration from Harvard.

Kim Clark

Vice President, Engineering

Mr. Clark heads the research and development efforts of Clusterworx®, ICE Box™ and other clustering products. While managing the Linux Networx hardware and software engineering teams, he ensures a clear direction for product development. Prior to joining Linux Networx, Mr. Clark held impressive positions as director of engineering at Novell over its $1 billion NetWare product line, and vice president of engineering at Lineo, an embedded Linux system software company. Mr. Clark's clustering background began at Novell when he established the development of its clustering products. His technical capability and expertise with large project development processes ensures Linux Networx products will meet the customer needs. Mr. Clark earned a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, with minors in mathematics and physics from Utah State University.

Jeffrey Ferraro

Vice President, Product Marketing, Enterprise Markets

Mr. Ferraro joins Linux Networx as vice president of product marketing with 20 years of experience in the IT industry. He is responsible for the vision and creation of high-performance systems that address the needs of the Enterprise markets. Mr. Ferraro spent four years prior to joining Linux Networx as a successful entrepreneur and CTO for several start-up companies. He also held a variety of positions including director of digital solutions and Internet architectures at CTG, manager at Analysts International, and manager of distributed systems and architectures at the Chicago Board Options Exchange. Mr. Ferraro earned his bachelor’s degree in computer science from Indiana University and a master’s degree in computer science from Illinois Institute of Technology.

Rich Furst

Vice President, North American Sales

Mr. Furst brings more than 18 years of experience in high-technology and IT sales to his position as vice president of North American sales for Linux Networx. He has spent the last four years focused on introducing high-capability platforms and architectures incorporating MM-COTS and Open Source middleware to the scientific and commercial marketplaces. With a proven track record of managing enterprise sales teams and building strong and successful long-term relationships with major worldwide corporations, Mr. Furst is responsible for building and leading the growing Linux Networx field sales organization. Mr. Furst has held sales and systems management roles with VA Linux, Firepond, Calico Technology, and Data General and has an impressive record of implementing solution-oriented selling strategies and programs. He earned a bachelor’s degree in computer science from DePaul University.

Bill Gahan

Vice President, Manufacturing

Mr. Gahan brings 19 years of experience in management of electronic manufacturing operations to his position as vice president of manufacturing. His vision for running efficient manufacturing and material departments translates into a better and more cost effective product for customers. Mr. Gahan focuses on increasing customer satisfaction while decreasing costs and building an infrastructure that can sustain growth. Prior to joining Linux Networx, Mr. Gahan held various executive positions including vice president of logistics at World Wireless Communications, director of operations for Cirque Corp., manufacturing manager for OEC Medical Systems, and manufacturing engineer for Iomega.

Dick Linville

Vice President, Corporate Development

Mr. Linville joins Linux Networx as vice president of corporate development with 25 years of experience in business development, sales, and marketing. As vice president of corporate development, Mr. Linville develops partner relationships, marketing strategies, and assists the president with other third party relationships. Before joining Linux Networx, he was President and CEO of Empire Candle Co. in Kansas City, where he repositioned the company as a leader in safe, high fashion candles available through mass markets at affordable prices. Mr. Linville served as vice president of corporate development at Nivo International, vice president of partner marketing at Novell, and held a number of key management positions at Cadis-I2, Netwise-Microsoft, Unisys, and United Telecom (Sprint). He earned a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from the University of Colorado and a master’s degree in business administration from the University of Texas.

Eric Pitcher, Ph.D.

Vice President, Product Marketing, Government, Industrial and Life Sciences

Mr. Pitcher brings over 20 years of experience in high performance computing to his position as vice president of product marketing at Linux Networx. As vice president of product marketing, he will ensure the company's products continue to meet the requirements of high performance computing customers in government, industry, and the life sciences. Prior to joining Linux Networx, Mr. Pitcher held a variety of marketing management positions for 15 years at Cray Inc., SGI, and Cray Research. Prior to leaving Cray, he was senior director of technical marketing, where he led the applications, benchmarking and industry marketing efforts for the company. Previously, he was on the faculty of the University of Miami. The author of 35 papers in scientific journals, Mr. Pitcher earned a Ph.D. in meteorology from the University of Michigan, a master's degree from McGill University, and a bachelor’s degree in physics from Memorial University in Canada.

Clark M. Roundy

Vice President, International Operations

As vice president of international operations, Mr. Roundy is responsible for Linux Networx expansion efforts into international markets and has oversight of subsidiaries located in Europe and Asia. Mr. Roundy originally joined Linux Networx as the vice president of sales and marketing and developed marketing, branding, and product strategies. He also holds a patent for the Evolocity® system design. Under his direction, Linux Networx consistently obtained 100% year-over-year sales growth. Prior to his work at Linux Networx, Mr. Roundy held the position of vice president of marketing at Alta Technology, general manager at Eyring Corporation, director of marketing and sales at Ortho-Graphics, Inc., and marketing and sales manager at the Eyring Research Institute. Mr. Roundy holds a bachelor's of science degree from BYU.
