THE NATIONAL COMMITTEE
FOR MISSING AND POW AFFAIRS (NCMPA)
Despite the liberation of Kuwait, there
are 605 prisoners of war (POWs) still languishing
in Iraqi prisons. The Kuwait government established
the NCMPA on May 5, 1991 to keep track of these men
and women and to fight for their freedom. In addition
to its role of co-ordinating efforts to relieve the
physical and mental distress and ensure the financial
security of the relatives of missing persons, the
NCMPA was also entrusted with the task of establishing
and completing the files on all Kuwaiti missing persons
so that the Iraqi government could be formally approached
about the issue.
With help from Kuwaiti governmental
and non-governmental organisations as well as Kuwaiti
citizens,
the Committee succeeded in keeping the
PoWs issue high on the international agenda. Its efforts
have won for Kuwait the support and understanding
of the global community.
