Meester Bad Ass

by Elliott Chin

WARNING: Spoiler Alert! There is extensive information about the new units and plot. If you read further, you'll uncover detailed info on the new units, as well as the Brood War campaign storyline.

Blizzard delivered as promised with Starcraft and created one of the best, most intricate strategy games of all time. With each unit so well balanced and full of strategic nuance, Starcraft really has strategic depth that is second to none in the real-time genre. While some players might complain about a few balance issues, in almost all respects, Starcraft is a perfectly balanced, addicting, and complex strategy game. So, is it possible to improve on near perfection? After seeing the follow-up to Starcraft, the Brood War expansion set, the answer is a resounding yes.
Developer:
Blizzard

Publisher:
Blizzard

Release Date:
October '98

The designers at Blizzard are working hard on Brood War, the official Blizzard expansion set. While other companies are working on Starcraft expansions, none promises to deliver so much new and improved content. The Retaliation and Insurrection expansions offer new, tangential storylines and a few hero units, but really offer nothing more (except for Retaliation's AI infighting).

Starcraft: Brood War will definitely arrive sometime before the end of the year.
Brood War, however, since it's being developed by Blizzard itself, will include: three new campaigns that directly follow the plot of Starcraft, more intricate and plot-based scenarios, three new tile sets, new music, new cinematics, new heroes, six new units and upgrades to two existing units, and new special abilities. This is a packed expansion set that promises significant enhancements to the original Starcraft.
