American Society of Muslims Community Purpose Statement

To glorify Allah’s presence in every aspect of our worship.  To spread Allah's word to humanity through Da'wah (propagation) efforts.  To invite humanity into our community life and educate them about our religion through trained Daa’ies (propagators).  To demonstrate our love for Allah and Allah’s messenger through service to humanity.

As members of the Mosque we have clearly defined purposes that have been given to us in the Qu'ran which Imam W. Deen Mohammed has aligned himself with.  Knowing what our purposes are and carrying them out as they are explained in the Qu'ran is what brings Allah’s favor in terms of community progress.

H.Q. Sura LI – Ayat 56             “I have only created jinn and men, that they may worship me”.

H.Q. Sura II – Ayat 152             “Then do ye remember Me; I will remember you.  Be grateful to Me, and reject not Faith”.

H.Q. Sura II – Ayat 153             “O ye who believe!  Seek help with patient perseverance and prayer:  for Allah is with those who patiently persevere”.

The suggestion is, that before we are anything else, we are worshippers (servants) of Allah.  We are not doctors, lawyers, plumbers, imams, or anything else before we are worshippers.  Actually this means doing what Allah commands us to do or being workers in Allah’s cause first.  This be no way suggests neglect of our personal lives.  To the contrary it fosters our personal and family growth.

H.Q. Sura LXI – Ayat 10             “O ye who believe!  Shall I lead you to a bargain that will save you from a grievous penalty? …

H.Q. Sura LXI – Ayat 11             “That you believe in Allah and Allah’s apostle, and that ye strive (your utmost) in the cause of Allah, with your property and your persons:  that will be best for you, if ye but knew!

H.Q. Sura LXI – Ayat 12             “He will forgive you your sins, and admit you to gardens beneath which rivers flow, and to beautiful mansions in gardens of eternity: that is indeed the supreme achievement”.

H.Q. Sura II – Ayat 143             “Thus have we made of you an Ummat (community) justly balanced, that ye might be witnesses over the nations, and the Apostle a witness over yourselves; and We appointed the Qibla to which thou wast used, only to test those who followed the Apostle from those who would turn on their heels (from the faith).  Indeed it was (a change) momentous, except to those guided by Allah, and never would Allah make your faith of no effect.  For Allah is to all people most surely full of kindness, most merciful”.

Here we are told the Mosque exists to establish community life.  It acts as a social womb and community is its destiny.  This requires loving and trusting other members, working and cooperating with each other to develop community social independence.  This should all be done with respect for the lives of others.   Through our unity of purpose and love for each other, we become witnesses over the nations.

The Hadith of Prophet Mohammed (PBUH) states, “None of you (truly) believes until he wishes for his brother what he wishes for himself”.  Also, “You will not be believers until you have faith and you will not have faith until you love one another”.

The Holy Qu'ran states we are to be justly balanced.  Balance in the areas of (1) Worship (2) Propagation (3) Professional Evangelism (4) Fellowship with others of humanity (5)

Service to humanity.  When we are balanced in these areas we are healthy as a Mosque and Allah then causes the Mosque to grow through us with balance.

WHAT ARE WE TO BE AS A MOSQUE?  (Who and what are we?)

H.Q. Sura VI – Ayat 165             “It is Allah who hath made you (Allah’s) agents, inheritors (khalifah) of the earth:  Allah hath raised you in ranks, some above others: that Allah may try you in the gifts Allah hath given you: for thy lord is quick in punishment: yet Allah is indeed oft forgiving, most merciful”.

We are to share in the responsibility of social civil obedience.  We are Allah’s agents; therefore we are to magnify Allah through our actions, thereby being witnesses over the world.  As Khalifah, Allah has created the earth for us to use as a utility to manifest contemporary progressive community life.  Imam Mohammed says, “putting a khalifah in the earth is the beginning of making progress in life.”  Surely this must be true because you cannot progress and rule effectively from a social standpoint unless you accept personal and global responsibility.

H.Q. Sura VII – Ayat 188             “Say: I have no power over any good or harm to myself except as Allah willeth.  If I had knowledge of the unseen, I should have multiplied all good, and no evil should have touched me, I am but a Warner, and a bringer of glad tidings to those who have faith”.

As Muslims we are to believe as the Prophet believed.  He saw himself as a bringer of glad tidings to those who have faith.  We are to do the same.  We should establish service-oriented programs that we and others among humanity can benefit from.

Our main artery of community publication if the weekly Muslim Journal, which carries verses from the Qu'ran, and Hadith from the life of our Prophet Mohammed (PBUH), and the vision of Imam Warith Deen Mohammed.  In addition, it carries community and global news.  Through it and other printed material as well as electronic media, we are able to give the good news or be bringers of glad tidings to those of faith.  Our religion enjoins on us as individuals and as a collective body, the responsibility and obligation of taking the message of Al-Islam to the public and of being of benefit to humanity.

H.Q. Sura LXII – Ayat 9             “O ye who believe!  When the call is proclaimed to prayer on Friday (the day of assembly), hasten earnestly to the remembrance of Allah, and leave off Business (and traffic):  that is best for you if you but knew!”

H.Q. Sura LXII – Ayat 10             “And when the prayer is finished, then may ye disperse through the land, and seek of the bounty of Allah:  and celebrate the praises of Allah often (and without stint): that ye may prosper”.

The most important day in our religion is Friday or the day of the assembly prayer.   It is enjoined on all members.  Unless circumstances are mitigating, no one is exempt.  While coming to the mosque on Friday is a command of Allah, Imam Warith Deen Mohammed has stated we should come to the Mosque for other community affairs at least twice a week, and three times a week would not be too much.  Hold back meetings may be necessary after our conventional service to address immediate pressing concerns.  We should seek to offer our prayers in the Mosque daily.

H.Q. Sura IX – Ayat 18             “The Mosque of Allah shall be visited and maintained by such as believe in Allah and the last day, establish regular prayers, and practice regular charity, and fear none (at all) except Allah, It is they who are expected to be on true guidance”.
