The decisions the Council makes have an impact on all our lives - and the Local Body Elections are your chance to have a say in that.

The most recent election was held on Saturday 13 October 2001. See the final results.

In the 2001 elections, voters were able to vote for the Mayor, City Councillors, Regional Councillors, for members of the District Health Board, and in some areas for Community Boards and Liquor Licensing Trusts.

The Mayor of Wellington City is elected on a "city-wide" basis. The Councillors are elected by wards - of which there are six in Wellington - the Northern, Onslow, Lambton, Western, Eastern and Southern wards (you can view these by clicking here).

The next local body election will now not be until 9 October 2004. To be able to vote in a local body election, you need to be enrolled. You are eligible to enrol and vote if you:

  • Are 18 years of age or older;
  • Are a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident; and
  • Have lived in New Zealand for one year or more without leaving the country.
Enrolment forms are available at Post Shops, public libraries or local authorities offices, by calling 0800 ENROL NOW (0800 36 76 56) or from the elections website: www.elections.org.nz.
