Monday, July 21, 2003 Posted by dave : all the news that we make up we print...
So I'm reading the NY Times on the train this morning and down @ the bottom the page, next to the bra ad :-), is this little "story",
Liberal English Paper Thinks About Starting U.S. Magazine By LIZETTE ALVAREZ The Guardian, a newspaper in Britain with a small, but growing following in America, is beginning to research the possibility of publishing a news magazine in the United States, The Guardian's spokeswoman Isabel Milner, said.
The newspaper, which has a circulation of 401,918, noted a surge in traffic on its Web site, particularly since the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center. The Guardian's site has more global users than any other British news domain, with an estimated seven million readers, but it is unable to break out how many of those people come specifically from the United States.
"The letters we get seem to appreciate The Guardian as an alternative voice, a sort of liberal analysis and broad church comment," Ms. Milner said.
Ms. Milner said the newspaper was researching the idea of starting a Guardian magazine in the United States to introduce a more intellectual, liberal voice to the country's newspaper and news magazine readers.
"It's one of a number of options," Ms. Milner said, "we are looking at to build on the huge success The Guardian is currently enjoying in the United States."
But the project is embryonic at this stage, she cautioned.
Now I'm no professional but doesn't a speculative story about a possible move that's in the "embryonic" stage of a foreign paper to the US market seem just a little strange? I wonder if this is just an "innocent" marketing move, "I'll give you money if you print a bogus fluff piece for me", or if there's a more complex explanation.

From Slashdot (via Wired):
John Conyers Jr. (D-Mich.) and Howard Berman (D-Calif.) have introduced a bill to congress that would make it a felony to, among other things, upload a single file to a peer-to-peer network. So if you plan on; running for elected office, purchasing a firearm, joining the armed forces or leaving the country don't do that okay :-( Howard Berman has co-sponsored some great legislation in the past BTW, does everyone remember the bill trying to make Cesar E. Chavez's birthday a federal holiday? Or how about that great one to welcoming President Chen Shui-bian of Taiwan to the United States.
Thanks alot guys, it's hard working congressmen like you that make this country great!

Don't hate the player hate the game. Nowadays, it seems to be a popular contact sport to trash talk the french. While I'll admit that theres plenty of things to dislike, french ass-cheese being somewhere near the top of that list, but there's plenty of things to like as, well, foie-gras and eau de vie de Poire Williams do it for me. Just keep telling yourself, hating all things French is like blaming all Americans for Jerry Lewis.

Spend the day yesterday playing Petanque and drinking Ricard in Brooklyn with a thousand French people. For some reason French people get a little snootywhen they get beaten at what amounts to their national pastime by an American who's never played before.... :-) Happy Bastille day

Posted by dave : Freaks and weirdos
Working in the "hi-tech" field you get quite a collection of freaks and weirdos but for some reason I think I've had more than my share. Take for example this fine specimen.
This, um, gentleman, up and decided one day that the packing material from Dell did such a good job at keeping those NIC cards from breaking that it must be a great hat. Now the obvious Al-Quaeda implications aside (ridiculous beard & turban) he started at the office as a fairly regular guy. Just out of school. Eager to learn. Friendly, if somewhat dweeby. Amazing what 10 hour days can do to a person after only 6 months.
Mothers don't let your kids grow up to be techies.
