Lesson 1 - The Garter Belt

Barbie doll Garter Belt You will need:

1 yd white satin ribbon 1/4 inch wide.
6 inches ruffled lace, 1 inch wide
    1 decoration, rosebud applique, etc.
    4 tiny snaps
2.25 inches lingerie elastic, 1/4 inch - 3/8 inch wide.
    Hand sewing needle, matching thread
Step 1:

Cut your elastic piece to about 2 and 1/4" long.
Cut your ruffled lace to about 5 inches long.
Cut 4 pieces of ribbon, each 6 inches long.

Step 2

With hand sewing needle, using DOUBLE thread, tack the elastic to the wrong side of the lace ruffle. Backstitch it tight.
Pulling firmly on the elastic, stretch it a bit at a time with your left (or right, if you are a lefty) hand while you make a tiny running stitch with your other hand. If you use a fairly long needle, you will find the job easier.
Keep stitching until you run out of elastic. Trim off excess lace ruffle.
Step 3

Turn the ruffle so that you see the INSIDE, elastic facing you.
Pinch it together, and whip stitch the edges tightly together.
Using an overcast stitch, whip the rest of the raw lace edge together.
Step 4

Fold your first piece of ribbon in half, shiny side out.
Place the fold along the waist band of the garter belt, about 1/2 inch off center. Tack it down. Do the same with the other side.
For the back, you will want the ribbons just a teeny bit more to the right and left of center, to compensate for Babs ample hips.
Step 5

Fashion Doll hosiery is available from Dollspart Supply Co. for a very reasonable price. Check your local doll magazine for their address.
To turn this into a pair of panties, add a bit of 1/2" ribbon to cover the crotch, waist to waist, like a diaper sort of thing.
The photo above is what mine looks like -- I haven't sewn on the snaps yet, but I was laughing so hard at myself, I wanted to share it.
The Brassiere

Barbie doll Bra

You will need:
1/4 yd white satin ribbon 1/4 inch wide.
6 inches ruffled lace, 1 inch wide
    1 decoration, rosebud applique, etc.
    2 tiny snaps
    Hand sewing needle, matching thread
Step 1:

Cut your ruffled lace to fit around your Babs bustline, plus about an inch.
Cut 2 pieces of ribbon, each about 3 inches long.
Step 2

With hand sewing needle, using DOUBLE thread, tack the center of the lace ruffle - try to do it right between to upward scallops of the lace. Backstitch it tight, end thread, and tack on the applique, ribbon, or whatever you have chosen for decoration.
Put the thing over Babs "you-know-whats", then center the back so you can clip it with about 1/2 inch to spare on each end.
Fold the back edge of the lace in half, then in half again. Grhtm the folded tip, turn it under, and tack it down. Now you can add the snaps.
Check to be sure that the back meets up properly. It should fit pretty snug, so that the lace stretches over top of Babs "you-know-whats".
Tack on the ribbon straps, using Babs as a guide on where to put them.
The photo above is what mine looks like -- I was really happy with the way it fits, but Babs balked at letting me put her on the scanner until I promised not to show her face.
